Under supervision of the CID Lieutenant, the Police Evidence Technician assists in the receipt, storage, tracking, and safekeeping of evidence and property for the Mount Vernon Police Department. Essential duties and responsibilities include receiving, storing, and maintaining crime scene and accident scene evidence to aid in the prosecution of criminal and civil cases; documenting all handling of evidence and property; maintaining chain of custody through effective documentation of all procedures according to State and Federal regulations. The role involves packaging, storing, and safeguarding property and evidence; entering and updating data into computer systems, logbooks, and case files; releasing items to authorized parties within the scope of authority; and documenting the return of evidence to custody. The technician will weigh all narcotics entering or leaving the property room, research case dispositions for disposal and release of evidence and property, and upon notification of case closure, destroy or dispose of evidence and property or return it to the owner. Responsibilities also include conducting regular inventory of the evidence room and property, organizing and maintaining order in the property and evidence storage areas. The position may involve assisting the Sr. Evidence Technician by logging, labeling, packaging, and transporting evidence, and may require transporting evidence to the State Crime Laboratory. Ordering supplies and materials as needed is also part of the role. The Evidence Technician must maintain the integrity, professionalism, values, and goals of the Mount Vernon Police Department by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved. This includes supporting the relationship between the City of Mount Vernon and the constituent population by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior, promoting City goals and priorities, and maintaining and enforcing confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and City information. The role involves monitoring staff compliance with security procedures and privacy laws, policies, and guidelines, and performing related duties as required or assigned. The Evidence Technician may be required to testify in court proceedings and perform other duties as assigned.
