About The Position

Police Property & Evidence Technicians play a vital role in supporting law enforcement operations by ensuring the safe, secure, and accurate management of property and evidence. This is a non-sworn position responsible for assisting officers in managing the receipt, storage, and safekeeping of property and evidence collected. The role involves maintaining accurate records, ensuring the integrity of the chain of custody, and disposing of property according to legal and departmental procedures. Technicians work in a support role, ensuring adherence to PBP policies and Pennsylvania criminal procedure rules. Individuals are expected to perform a full range of duties independently, applying program knowledge, exercising judgment and initiative, and interacting with the public.

Requirements

  • Must submit or show proof of all general requirements at the time of application.
  • Must submit a complete application including education, work experience, a resume (if applicable) and completed supplemental questions.
  • Must become residents of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and remain a resident throughout employment.
  • A current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License (or out of state equivalent) is required at the time of submitting the application and will be verified prior to appointment to the position and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Candidates may be disqualified from consideration based on the results of their background investigation.
  • Candidates being considered for employment must submit official transcripts verifying post-secondary education (college/university, trade school, etc.) prior to hire.
  • One (1) year of full-time relevant administrative experience and/or police property and evidence experience.
  • An Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or a related field.
  • Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position, based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above. The Total Qualifying Requirement is three (3) years.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and documents property and evidence from officers, detectives, and other sources.
  • Safely stores and organizes property and evidence in a secure and organized manner.
  • Conducts regular inventory of the evidence room and property.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records of the chain of custody, ensuring the integrity of evidence.
  • Maintains procedures for the custody and handling of evidence.
  • Tracks statute of limitations and legal time frames.
  • Checks for compliance with regulations, processes evidence for transfer to crime laboratories for testing, and to prosecutors for court cases.
  • Maintains confidentiality of city records and/or confidential discussions pertaining to city records.
  • Assists individuals inquiring about property or evidence.
  • Assesses evidence for disposition, whether it should be returned to the owner, destroyed, or disposed of according to legal requirements.
  • Exemplifies the Bureau rules and regulations, both on and off duty.
  • Performs activities, functions, and other tasks and duties as assigned or required.
