About The Position

Operation Kindness Humane Society is seeking an Everyday Adoption Center Specialist to join their team. This role operates within a new Everyday Adoption Center located inside Petsmart on Coit Road, which houses adoptable dogs and cats from Operation Kindness. The center includes kennels, enclosures, and a meet-and-greet playroom. Adoptions are available seven days a week during store hours. This is a 40-hour per week position with a schedule of Friday through Monday, 8:30 am to 7:30 pm. The company offers a fun and rewarding work environment with excellent benefits. Availability on weekend days and holidays is required, with hourly employees receiving time and a half pay for working on 10 company-designated holidays. A Spanish speaker is a plus.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven ability to speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Minimum 6 months previous experience in Customer Service role.
  • Basic computer knowledge (Internet, Microsoft Office).
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Proven record of success in a customer service role or proven record of success at Operation Kindness.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Proven ability and interest in working successfully with all types of people including customers, volunteers, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Proven ability to multi-task.
  • Proven record of reliability pertaining to tardiness and attendance.
  • Proven ability to successfully handle challenging and complex situations.
  • Feels and expresses a genuine liking for animals and working in an animal care environment.
  • Requires occasional lifting and carrying animals and shelter materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Requires frequent walking and handling of dogs and cats of a variety of sizes and temperaments.
  • Requires frequent and extended periods of standing and walking.
  • Ability to drive company vans/vehicles.
  • May be exposed to unpleasant odors and noises.
  • May be exposed to bites, scratches, and animal diseases.

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish speaking preferred.
  • Experience working with animals or significant pet knowledge strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Providing exceptional customer service for potential adopters.
  • Greeting each client promptly and pleasantly.
  • Thoroughly explaining the questionnaire and adoption process.
  • Observing the lobby area and ensuring all client needs are met.
  • Answering telephones in the front lobby area.
  • Checking voicemail and email and responding to or relaying messages accordingly.
  • Ensuring lobby, desks, and Meet & Greet rooms are neat and organized.
  • Ensuring ample copies of required forms are readily available.
  • Filing questionnaires and other necessary forms.
  • Transporting shelter animals to/from the main shelter as needed.
  • Assisting in loading/unloading shelter vehicles when needed.
  • Working alongside volunteers and other departments to ensure a positive and kind working environment.
  • Washing, folding, and restocking laundry.
  • Sweeping and mopping lobby floor.
  • Dusting and cleaning all surfaces in lobby and meet & greet rooms.
  • Routinely wiping down high-touch surfaces such as phones, kiosks, door handles, etc.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of all shelter space, including storage areas and equipment maintenance.
  • Closing financial books and depositing paperwork accordingly at the end of the day.
  • Transporting adoptable cats to other Retail Adoption locations as needed.
  • Attending and assisting with Off Site Adoption events (including development events and Galleria) as needed, including preparation of animals and supplies prior to the event, processing adoptions at the event, and breakdown of supplies post event.
  • Feeding all animals in care twice daily according to the color-coded measuring system.
  • Ensuring that all animals always have access to fresh clean water.
  • Being aware of special/prescription diets, special feeding instructions, and following the directions laid out for them.
  • Giving medications as needed, following any prescription instructions.
  • Walking and exercising dogs regularly throughout the day, picking up any messes as they occur.
  • Supervising small groups and pairs of dogs in the playroom each day.
  • Rotating adult cats and age-appropriate kittens into their “catio” each day for exercise and socialization.
  • Following proper safety guidelines and training protocols when interacting with animals.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing all shelter animal enclosures and the kennel areas at PetSmart, following proper procedures for sanitation and disease prevention.
  • Maintaining cleanliness throughout the day by removing messes in a timely manner.
  • Performing weekly rotating deep cleaning schedules to sanitize kennel areas top to bottom.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing all food and water bowls.
  • Spending time getting to know the animals in our care and socializing with them to help prepare them to meet potential adopters.
  • Reviewing and verifying questionnaires for accuracy and completeness and using it as a tool to facilitate adoption counseling.
  • Matching potential adopters to available animals while providing necessary instruction and information.
  • Helping to make successful matches for adopter and pet.
  • Showing and handling dogs and cats of all ages and sizes to potential adopters.
  • Taking dogs of all sizes from enclosures to designated areas for the purpose of introducing them to potential adopters.
  • Maintaining safe and responsible control of animals at all times.
  • Completely reviewing adoption documents with adopter.
  • Entering all adoptions into Pet Point adoption software.
  • Explaining medical records and other pertinent pet information to adopter.
  • Processing payment and accurately recording payment information for each adoption.
  • Other duties as assigned.
