The Esports Competition Manager will support and coordinate the competitive structure of Stony Brook University’s Esports program. This role involves scouting, assisting with recruitment in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Esports, managing player registrations, eligibility, and competition/practice schedules. The manager will also assist with student engagement initiatives, facilitate intercollegiate competition through tournament hosting, and coordinate competition broadcasts to ensure high-quality production. As a team member within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services, the incumbent will collaborate with colleagues, participate in meetings, share insights, and engage in collaborative decision-making to foster a cooperative and supportive atmosphere and achieve departmental goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Two (2) years of competitive esports experience (as a coach or manager) in League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, Valorant, or other multiplayer online video games with team-based elements.
  • Experience with team management and/or recruitment efforts in esports.
  • Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License.
  • Have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
  • Strong understanding of competitive esports landscapes, including game mechanics, strategies, and player development.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to analyze player strengths and weaknesses to support player development efforts.
  • Experience working with esports hardware, software, and streaming technology.
  • Strong organizational, coordination, and motivational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with university staff, students, and external partners.
  • Knowledge of esports broadcasting, including streaming software (OBS, vMix), overlays, and live production techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous collegiate or professional experience working in esports.
  • Experience teaching, analyzing player strengths and weaknesses, and/or creating competitive Esports strategies at the collegiate level.

Responsibilities

  • Support and coordinate the competitive structure of Stony Brook University’s Esports program.

  • Collaborate with other team members within Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services to collectively contribute to the overall functioning and effectiveness of the services provided.
  • Actively participate in team meetings, share insights, and engage in collaborative decision-making processes.
  • Foster a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, ensuring seamless teamwork, and collectively work towards the common goals and objectives of Student Health, Wellness & Prevention Services.
  • Support Stony Brook University Esports teams to ensure their competitive success.
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Esports in identifying and recruiting prospective esports student-athletes.
  • Participate in evaluating potential esports players and provide input regarding scholarship considerations.
  • Coordinate and facilitate tryouts, ensuring fair and comprehensive evaluations of all candidates.
  • Monitor and track eligibility requirements for all players.
  • Maintain player registration, team rosters, and practice schedules.
  • Coordinate intercollegiate competition schedules, ensuring teams participate in relevant leagues and tournaments.
  • Assist in the planning, organization, and execution of on-campus esports tournaments and events.
  • Coordinate competition broadcasts, ensuring high-quality production, professional commentary, and seamless streaming for competitive matches.
  • Assist with engagement efforts at the beginning of each academic year to integrate new students into the esports program.
  • Support mentorship initiatives to support student players academically and socially.
  • Assist with student orientation and esports-related recruitment events.
  • Maintain a supportive and inclusive environment for esports participants.
  • Maintain accurate records of team performances, student eligibility, and player development.
  • Monitor adherence to university policies and external esports governing bodies.
  • Assist Institutional Research with tracking and compiling esports program metrics.
  • Support in the development and maintenance of partnerships and sponsorships related to the esports program.
  • Ensure teams have access to the most modern gaming equipment and playing strategies.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain esports facility hardware and software.
  • Assist in maintaining and upgrading esports technology, including gaming PCs, networking, and streaming setups.
  • Assist in supervising student employees working within the esports facility.
  • Assist with Campus Recreation Center facility operation and supervision, including opening and closing duties as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to students, supervisors, or other employees and contribute to a safe educational and working environment.
  • Collect and compile monthly and quarterly operational and statistical data as needed.
  • Support various aspects of recreational programming, including student orientation, Seawolves outdoor adventure program, weekend life programs, and departmental special events.
  • Participate in opportunities that promote learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.).
  • Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of the individual unit/department (i.e. campus wide traditions, events, programs, etc.).
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
