About The Position

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment support maintenance equipment and light and heavy vehicles on assigned projects or activities of a public works nature. The position requires manual labor, which will be completed alone or as part of a crew. You will perform a variety of manual tasks and activities, i.e., Operate heavy equipment and perform work in street maintenance. Work includes on-site maintenance, cleaning, and service equipment, emergency needs, vehicles, tools, and work area. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at work sites. Report to work during all significant weather events or random incidents. This position is designated among essential personnel and reports during significant weather events or random incidents.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the maintenance of streets, roads, curbs, and gutters.
  • Safely and correctly apply road construction and maintenance techniques.
  • Safely operate light and heavy road maintenance and construction vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of how to safely operate, but not limited to gas-powered jackhammers, tampers, saws, backhoes, grade all, 1- or 2-ton trucks, mini and large excavators, off-road vehicles, industrial mowers, skid steers, chain saws, or dump truck.
  • Ability to adhere to the personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintain individually provided PPE in a functional condition.
  • Attend shifts in accordance with company policy.
  • This position is subject to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
  • Occasional overtime required.
  • Ability to be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift change.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and officials, representative of outside agencies, and general public.
  • Both verbal and written communication, including conveying and following instructions and providing information to the public.
  • Understand and follow instruction and communicate effectively, as required.
  • Knowledge and adherence to all applicable State and Federal laws, local ordinances, City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge and adherence to the Texas Motor Vehicle Code and other codes, laws, and statutes relating to the given position.
  • Endeavors to continuously improve the services provided to Tyler's citizens.
  • Must have one (1) year of experience care and handling of a 3-ton and/or 5-ton dump truck in a safe manner around others, as well as the mechanical experience to make minor repairs on the equipment listed above.
  • Must have Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement with a clear driving record.
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, or training that has prepared the incumbent to perform the essential duties of the position may be considered.
  • The City Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description.
  • Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate’s Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
  • No person under eighteen (18) years of age will be employed in any position requiring the operation of a City motorized vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates various types of equipment and vehicles, such as asphalt trucks, dump trucks, rollers, graders, front-end loaders, skid-steer, back-hoe, and pick-up trucks.
  • Performs a variety of vehicle and equipment maintenance duties, including, but not limited to, monitoring/checking vehicle lighting systems, brakes, horns, safety devices, and gauges, checking fluid levels, performing preventative maintenance, and assisting mechanics as needed.
  • Reports equipment failures/deficiencies to supervisor as required.
  • Clears and maintains City streets and rights-of-way, including, but not limited to, hauling and spreading road materials, loading, hauling, and unloading various items such as snow, dirt, debris, brush, yard waste, discarded furniture and appliances, trees/limbs, cement, and construction materials.
  • Performs a variety of labor-intensive duties, including, but not limited to, cleaning vehicles, job sites, and the shop/garage, loading and unloading vehicles, patching and repairing streets, shoveling gravel/asphalt (other material as needed), trimming and/or removing trees, digging trenches, compacting earth, installing guardrails, repairs, patching potholes, and assisting with other duties as required.
  • Maintains a safe work area, including placing and removing cones, barricades, and warning devices, and/or directing traffic at work sites to ensure the safety of the work crew and the public; cleans up work sites upon completion of the job; picks up all tools and equipment; secures the job site if returning later.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed.
  • Performs other duties and functions as assigned, required, or directed, or which are necessary, readily apparent, or related to other duties and responsibilities.
