About The Position

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment support maintenance equipment and light and heavy vehicles on assigned projects or activities of a public works nature. The position requires manual labor, completed alone or as part of a crew. You will perform various manual tasks and activities, i.e., operate heavy equipment and work in Street management. Work includes planning on-site work, maintenance, cleaning and service equipment, emergency needs, vehicles, tools, and work area. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at work sites. Report to work during all significant weather events or random incidents. This position is designated among essential personnel and reports during significant weather events or random incidents. Essential Functions Utilizes computer system or tablet for work orders, memos, reports, and other correspondence as required. Oversees the sealing of roadway cracks, places hot or cold asphalt mix,and other materials required for general road maintenance and repairs to required standards. Experience safely operating specialized trucks/machinery/heavy equipment used within each of the divisions, such as the Hot Mix Patch Truck, Asphalt Distributor, Milling Machine, Grade-all, Backhoe/Loader, Skid Loader, as well as other light/heavy equipment engaged in highly complex road reconstruction. Supervises and coordinates the work activities of assigned staff; assigns work, monitors work status, and inspects completed work; participates in and provides input in staffing decisions, discipline, and promotional opportunities; evaluates performance; mentors staff; and aids with career development. Maintains records and prepares daily team performance reports. Inputs, manages and utilizes inspection and other data and communications using the City Works database and Geographic Information System (GIS). Functions in a leadership and supervisory role onsite; assigns and reviews work of team members and trains personnel. Identifies hazards to determine if the job can be performed safely; conducts required safety checks. Maintains a safe work area, including places and removes cones, warning devices, and/or directs traffic at work sites to ensure the safety of work crew and public; cleans up work sites upon completion of the job; picks up all tools and equipment; secures the job site if returning later. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS : Fill in the absence of a foreman to manage crews. Maintains assigned equipment and notifies the Foreman of needed repairs. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed. Performs other duties and functions as assigned, required, or directed, necessary, readily apparent, or related to other duties and responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of experience operating equipment safely around others, as well as the mechanical experience to make minor repairs on the equipment listed.
  • Valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with a good driving record throughout the length of employment.
  • Ability to adhere to the personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintain individually provided PPE in a functional condition.
  • Attend shifts in accordance with company policy.
  • Ability to be flexible with last-minute schedule changes, location changes, and shift time changes.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and officials, representatives of outside agencies, and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively through both verbal and written means, including conveying and following instructions and providing information to the public.
  • Knowledge and adherence to all applicable State and Federal laws, local ordinances, City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge and adherence to the Texas Motor Vehicle Code and other codes, laws, and statutes relating to the position.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Suite, Database management, and web applications.
  • The physical ability to work under temperature extremes and for extended hours of time.
  • Working within confined spaces can be necessary for some tasks.
  • Working in the proximity of light and heavy machinery.

Nice To Haves

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • A combination of education, experience, or training that has prepared the incumbent to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • The City Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description.
  • Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate’s Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
