About The Position

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of asphalt truck, maintenance equipment, and light and heavy vehicles on assigned projects or activities of a public works nature. The position requires manual labor, which may be completed alone or as part of a crew. You will perform various manual tasks and activities, i.e., eliminate hazardous conditions, clean and service equipment, vehicles, tools, and work areas. Repairs damaged sidewalks and curbs, patches, and potholes. Clean and service equipment, vehicles, tools, and the work area. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at work sites. This position is designated among essential personnel and requires reporting to work during all significant weather events or emergency incidents.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools for maintaining streets and highways.
  • Ability to safely and correctly apply road construction and maintenance techniques.
  • Ability to safely operate light and heavy road maintenance and construction vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of how to safely operate, but not limited to, gas-powered jackhammers, tampers, saws, backhoes, 1- or 2-ton trucks, mini excavators, off-road vehicles, industrial mowers, skid steers, chain saws, or woodchippers.
  • Ability to adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintain individually provided PPE in a functional condition.
  • Attend shifts in accordance with company policy.
  • Ability to be flexible with last-minute schedule changes, location changes, and shift time changes.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and officials, representatives of outside agencies, and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively through both verbal and written means, including conveying and following instructions and providing information to the public.
  • Knowledge and adherence to all applicable State and Federal laws, local ordinances, City and Departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge and adherence to the Texas Motor Vehicle Code and other codes, laws, and statutes relating to the given position.
  • Must be able to operate a Mini Excavator, Concrete Mixer, Skid Steer, and perform much construction work under bridges, pipes, etc.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, or training that has prepared the incumbent to perform the position's essential duties.
  • Must have a valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License and good driving record throughout the length of employment.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and be able to manage time to meet deadlines effectively.
  • No person under eighteen (18) years of age will be employed in any regular full-time position.
  • No person under eighteen (18) years of age will be employed in any position requiring the operation of a City motorized vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement preferred.
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience in manual labor preferred.
  • Experience in concrete and drainage maintenance and repair is preferred.
  • Persons under eighteen (18) years of age may be employed in temporary or regular part-time positions, if they furnish the City with a minor’s release (Form 2-2) and are approved by the City Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with investigating work requests and make recommendations regarding the type of work to be performed.
  • Plan and organize the job, ensuring sufficient resources and materials are available.
  • Plan the layout of construction, installation, or repairs.
  • Perform concrete form, concrete repair, utility cuts, level ups, curb and gutter repair, and repair damage to concrete, rock, and drainage systems.
  • Operate/utilize various equipment or tools associated with activities, including a truck, hand tools, and asphalt crack seal materials.
  • Prepare surfaces prior to beginning work, mark guidelines to lay out work.
  • Operate an asphalt truck, Backhoe, Skid Steer, Mini Excavator, 1-ton flat bed, 5-ton flat bed, as well as the operation of hand tools and various additional equipment associated with crack seal base repair.
  • Maintain a safe work area, including; placing and removing cones, barricades, warning devices, and/or directing traffic at work sites to ensure the safety of work crew and public.
  • Clean up work sites upon completion of the job.
  • Pick up all tools and equipment.
  • Secure the job site if returning later.
  • Wash vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Clean up shop areas.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe and operable conditions.
  • Safely use, mix, and dilute all chemicals according to direction labels.
  • Observe safe driving principles and practices when operating motor vehicles.
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or classes as directed.
  • Perform other duties and functions as assigned, required, directed, necessary, readily apparent, or related to other duties and responsibilities.
