About The Position

Operates heavy equipment to construct, maintain and repair paved and unpaved County roads, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, ditches, catch basins and storm drainage systems. This role also involves maintaining public rights-of-way and assisting other divisions and departments, including County landfills. The operator may also drive dump trucks and other trucks, and operate backhoes, slope mowers, and asphalt paving machines. Responsibilities include manually loading/unloading materials, transporting equipment, using hand and power tools, inspecting equipment for safe working conditions, performing routine maintenance and cleaning, and adhering to all safety policies and procedures. Additionally, the role may involve instructing new crew members and maintaining work records.

Requirements

  • Requires high school diploma, GED equivalent or specialized vocational training.
  • Must possess a valid state commercial driver’s license (Class “A”) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Requires over two years and up to and including four years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment to construct, maintain and repair paved and unpaved County roads, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, ditches, catch basins and storm drainage systems.
  • Operates heavy equipment to maintain public rights-of-way.
  • Operates heavy equipment to assist other divisions and departments as necessary, including but not limited to maintaining County landfills.
  • May operate dump trucks and other trucks, back hoes, slope mower and asphalt paving machine.
  • Manually loads / unloads materials onto vehicles; transports equipment and materials to / from work sites.
  • Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.
  • Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working condition; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
  • May provide instruction to new crew members as assigned.
  • Maintains accurate and complete work records as required.
