About The Position

This role involves performing semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of streets and alleys. The Equipment Operator I is responsible for operating a 12-yard dump truck, identifying equipment needs, transporting equipment and materials, maintaining street and alley pavement through various methods like lifting distressed areas with polyurethane injection equipment, patching with hot and cold asphalt, and sealing joints and cracks. They may also operate heavy equipment during foul weather, train on specialized equipment, address citizen concerns, inspect job safety, maintain safe equipment operation, attend safety meetings, ensure safety equipment usage, inspect and maintain assigned equipment, perform vehicle inspections, and keep work locations and vehicles in order. The Equipment Operator II operates a wider range of equipment including a 12-yard dump truck, patch truck, rubber tire loader, skid steer, mini excavator, steel wheel roller, crack seal machine, and rubber tire roller. They transport equipment and materials, perform various street/alley maintenance activities such as crack sealing, pavement patching, grading, base repair, and asphalt overlay. This role also involves setting up and inspecting traffic control devices, performing cleaning and minor repairs to equipment, conducting pre-trip/post-trip inspections, preparing records, using hand tools, assisting with evaluating service requests, and potentially working nights, weekends, and holidays for inclement weather response, city initiatives, or special events. Both roles may involve operating/training on specialized heavy equipment in the absence of a Heavy Equipment Operator.

Requirements

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
6 months experience
1 year of experience operating equipment and machinery (EOII)
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Knowledge of operation and maintenance requirements of power-driven equipment
Knowledge of basic safe work practices
Knowledge in care, operation and maintenance of various power tools and equipment
Knowledge of maintenance and safety requirements for light to heavy construction equipment
Knowledge of work zone safety and traffic control requirements
Knowledge of tactics and techniques in street maintenance operations
Skill in operating light and moderate construction equipment
Skill in using an iPad for review and entry of work order data
Skill in effective oral and written communication
Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools
Ability to exercise some latitude for independent judgment in the absence of supervision
Ability to work in a team environment and treat people with respect
Ability to learn and practice new techniques and job skills
Ability to perform manual labor and to work in adverse weather conditions
Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker Endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
Work Zone Flagger certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
Valid Class C Texas driver's license
Work Zone Flagger certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire (EOII)

Responsibilities

Operate 12-yard dump truck.
Identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
Transport all equipment and materials between job sites.
Maintain street and alley pavement by patching distressed areas with hot and cold asphalt material.
Seal joints and cracks by applying a hot tar sealant.
May operate heavy equipment in clearing of streets and/or alleys during foul weather incidents.
Operate/train on specialized pieces of heavy equipment in the absence of Heavy Equipment Operator.
Address citizen concerns on the job site.
Inspect the overall safety of various job projects.
Maintain safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.
Attend safety meetings on a monthly basis.
Ensure all safety equipment is being utilized on a daily basis.
Inspect and maintain assigned equipment.
Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections and complete daily work sheet for equipment operated.
Keep work location and vehicle(s) in order.
Operate light equipment required in the upkeep and operation of the areas of responsibility.
Operates basic to moderately complex equipment including: 12-yard dump truck, patch truck, rubber tire loader, skid steer, mini excavator, steel wheel roller, crack seal machine, and rubber tire roller.
Transport equipment and materials to and between job sites using haul trailers.
Performs various street/alley maintenance activities including: crack sealing, pavement patch repair, grading/blading dirt alley easements, base repair, and asphalt overlay.
Sets up and inspects traffic control devices on work sites for compliance with safety requirements.
Regularly performs cleaning, routine maintenance, and minor repairs to equipment.
Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections.
Prepares records documenting productivity and equipment operated.
Uses various hand tools to support work activities.
Assists with evaluating service requests to define scope of work.
May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays to support inclement weather response, city initiatives or special events.
