The Environmental Supervisor IV, position number 37010137, is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Biology Program in Tallahassee and is responsible for supervising the Bench Biology Workgroup, consisting of six positions supporting microbiology and chlorophyll analyses. This position provides leadership, technical oversight, and operational direction to ensure high-quality laboratory services in support of environmental monitoring and protection efforts for the State of Florida. This position spends majority of time communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees; planning and directing employees’ work; and has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. Responsible for time and attendance of subordinates. Serves as Environmental Supervisor of the Bench Workgroup within the Biology Program and maintains sufficient staffing levels for efficient and effective laboratory operations. Performs supervisory work directing the efforts of professional and technical staff analyzing environmental samples for microbiology and chlorophyll analysis. Provides supervisory oversight and technical guidance for analytical methods to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance across the workgroup. Identifies training and competency needs for staff development. Ensures analyses are performed in accordance with the Laboratory Quality Manual, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and laboratory safety protocols. Supports quality assurance (QA) objectives, assists in the preparation of the Laboratory Quality Manual, and maintains SOPs. Evaluates the acceptability of routine analyses and performance tests, takes appropriate action in response to unusual or unexpected results, and documents actions taken. Directs activities associated with the laboratory’s certification program within the assigned area of responsibility. Ensures analytical results are reviewed, authorized, and reported within established laboratory deadlines, verifying data accuracy and completeness. Communicates regularly and effectively with the workgroup administrator and staff regarding workload, analytical methods, personnel, training, data reporting, and other work-related activities. Coordinates with other Biology Program administrators and managers on research projects, special studies, and workload issues. Participates in laboratory freezer and refrigerator alarm monitoring. Assists in designing, implementing, interpreting, and reporting focused laboratory and field studies in support of department program objectives. Analyzes and interprets biological and chemical data. Provides technical consulting services to agency programs and customers, performs technical reviews and evaluations, and participates on technical committees. Represents the Biology Program in department meetings and meetings with other agencies and stakeholders. Produces technical reports and presentations. Stays abreast of developing analytical technology and directs evaluation of new equipment and methodologies. Makes purchasing recommendations for equipment and expenses. Ensures program funds, equipment, and supplies are efficiently and effectively utilized. Performs other duties as directed.
