About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Environmental Protection Engineer IV for the Office of Mines and Minerals. This position will have responsibilities for both design and construction management of AMLRD reclamation projects and is critical to performing engineering work, developing reclamation plans, and overseeing construction necessary to utilize federal AML funds to eliminate public safety hazards and environmental degradation at Abandoned Mine Sites. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with a bachelor's degree in an engineering science
  • Requires possession of Illinois certificate as a registered professional engineer
  • Requires four years of professional engineering experience related to working with complex engineering problems. A master's degree in engineering or business administration may be substituted for two years of professional experience

Nice To Haves

  • Four (4) years of professional civil engineering experience in the reclamation of abandoned mine lands
  • Extensive knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used in site investigations in the analysis of soils, water, and vegetation
  • Working knowledge of analyzing various environmental factors and apply theory, principles, and practices to design reclamation solutions
  • Working knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques utilized in the preparation of detailed construction plans and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of the physical and the chemical processes of the generation of acidity at abandoned mine sites and of methods to eliminate and mitigate the acid mine drainage
  • Working knowledge of IDOT standard specifications, construction management, inspection and documentation, and familiarity with construction equipment and methods
  • Four (4) years of experience planning, organization, and project management skill to plan and manage multiple projects and prepare and maintain project files and reports
  • Working knowledge on how to clearly communicate Division plans, policies and regulations to other staff, landowners, consultants, and the public
  • Four (4) years of experience effectively coordinating and providing technical assistance to other staff

Responsibilities

  • Under direction of Abandoned Mine Lands Reclamation Division Manager for Northern/Central Illinois, serves as a professional engineer for engineering work in the region
  • Investigates site conditions to determine safety and environmental hazards on abandoned mined land
  • Oversees inspection of awarded reclamation contracts to ensure the construction is completed according to the plans and specifications
  • Works in conjunction with engineers, geologists, and other technical staff on complex multi-problem projects
  • Attends developmental technical training classes provided by the U.S. Department of Interior Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
