About The Position

This is professional work assisting the environmental manager in one of the five statewide multi-county geographic areas. The incumbent uses independent judgment and performs the more difficult or complicated inspections, assists the manager with inspection priorities and conducts training. Duties include conducting assigned on-site inspections of x-ray facilities and users of radioactive materials, performing radiation emergency response duties, assessing hazards and taking appropriate actions to minimize radiation exposure to workers, the public, and the environment, and performing radiation related investigations as assigned. The role also involves serving as a mentor for new staff, maintaining and enhancing professional and technical skills through training and professional organizations, and acting as a radiation technical advisor when answering radiation workers and public concerns. The incumbent may also serve on committees, assist the environmental manager by providing technical, scientific and professional guidance, investigate special areas, report unusual findings, and serve on in-house workgroups as assigned. Additionally, the incumbent may be required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency, including working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties. This position is available on a 24-hour-a-day basis for response to radiation emergencies and requires performing duties as a member of the State Radiation Emergency Response Team. The incumbent is subject to emergency calls from their residence for the protection of life or property. This position is in compliance with and monitors compliance with mandatory requirements in Sections 215.422 and 112.061, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 691-24.001, Florida Administrative Code. The incumbent is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36.003, Florida Administrative Code. A valid Florida Driver’s License is required, and the incumbent may be required to use state or county vehicles for official business. The position requires the ability to lift 60 pounds of equipment, Pcard responsibilities, and successful completion of required core training modules and courses. Federal certification in mammography inspections (MQSA) may be required.

Requirements

• Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
• Willing to work in a special needs or Red Cross shelter, or perform other emergency duties.
• Authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
• Willing to physically come in the office daily and perform field work.
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent 4 years of experience in chemistry, physics, health physicist (radiation related) or nuclear medicine technology (or similar work experience).
• Have or can obtain a valid Florida’s Driver’s License within 30 days if selected.
• Willing to respond to radiation incidents any day of the week, if properly trained, made aware of associated risks and are monitored for radiation exposure.
• Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of radiation.
• Must be able to lift 60 pounds of equipment.
• Must receive a minimum score of 70% on each written exam of the required core training modules and must attend all required core training courses designated in the training and qualification procedures.
• Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities
