About The Position

This is specialized professional environmental work evaluating on-site the use of radioactive materials and x-ray machines within an assigned geographical region. The incumbent also responds to environmental radiation incidents. Duties include performing field inspections of x-ray machine facilities and radioactive material users to determine compliance with department rules and regulations, performing radiation emergency response duties, assessing hazards and taking appropriate actions to minimize radiation exposure, and performing radiation related investigations. The role also involves serving as a mentor for new staff, maintaining and enhancing professional and technical skills, acting as a radiation technical advisor, and serving on committees. The incumbent will assist the environmental manager by providing technical, scientific, and professional guidance, investigating special areas, reporting unusual findings, and serving on in-house workgroups. Emergency duty is required, including working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, and responding to disasters. The position is available on a 24-hour basis for radiation emergencies as a member of the State Radiation Emergency Response Team. The incumbent must have a valid Florida Driver’s License and may be required to use state or county vehicles. They must be able to lift 60 pounds of equipment, have Pcard responsibilities, and must pass required core training modules. Federal certification in mammography inspections may be required.

Requirements

• Knowledge of terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of radiation.
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent 4 years of experience in the area of chemistry, physics, health physicist (radiation related) or nuclear medicine technology (or similar work experience).
• Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
• Must be able to lift 60 pounds of equipment.
• Must receive a minimum score of 70% on each written exam of the required core training modules and must attend all required core training courses designated in the training and qualification procedures.
• All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Nice To Haves

• Federal certification in mammography inspections (MQSA - Mammography Quality Standards Act) will be required if deemed necessary by the Field Operations Environmental Administrator.

Responsibilities

• Performs field inspections of x-ray machine facilities and radioactive material users and makes determinations concerning compliance with department rules and regulations to protect the environment and the public.
• Performs radiation emergency response duties, assessing hazards and taking appropriate actions to minimize radiation exposure to workers, the public, and the environment.
• Performs radiation related investigations assigned.
• Serves as mentor for new staff.
• Maintains and enhances professional and technical skills through training and professional organizations.
• Serves as radiation technical advisor when answering radiation workers and public concerns.
• Serves on committees when requested to further radiation research issues.
• Assist the environmental manager by providing technical, scientific and professional guidance.
• Investigate special areas and report unusual findings to the environmental manager.
• Serve on in-house workgroups as assigned.
• Other related duties.
• Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.
• Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
• Available on a 24-hour-a-day basis for response to radiation emergencies.
• Perform duties as a member of the State Radiation Emergency Response Team.
• Employee is subject to emergency calls from his residence for the protection of life or property.
• This position is in compliance with and monitors compliance (when applicable) with the mandatory requirements in Sections 215.422 and 112.061, Florida Statutes, and Chapter 691-24.001, Florida Administrative Code.
• The incumbent is considered to have regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36.003, Florida Administrative Code.
• Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
• The incumbent in this position may be required to use vehicles owned, leased, or operated by the state or county to conduct official state business.
• State or county vehicles shall be used only for officially authorized duties and not for personal use, unless a specific exception applies under Florida law (F.S. § 287.17).
• Must be able to lift 60 pounds of equipment.
