About The Position

The Cleveland Department of Public Health (CDPH) is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, and mission-driven professional to serve as an Environmental Program Coordinator within the Division of Environmental Health. The position plays a key role in coordinating Food Safety training and the Body Art Program, supporting regulatory compliance, staff training, and quality improvement efforts that protect the health and safety of Cleveland residents. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator, experienced in environmental health regulations, and committed to continuous improvement and workforce development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Business or Public Administration, Social Sciences, or closely related field preferred.
  • Two (2) years of any equivalent combination of education, training and experience in program administration required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry thirty (30) pounds.
  • Valid State of Ohio Driver's License required.
  • Strong knowledge of food safety regulations and environmental health standards.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory codes consistently.
  • Excellent organizational and project coordination skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead trainings and present information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and inspection database systems.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as an EHSIT/REHS at a local and/or state health department or relevant agency (education may be considered in lieu of experience).
  • Valid State of Ohio Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) registration in accordance with Chapter 4736 of the Ohio Revised Code.
  • A master’s degree in public health, business/health/public administration, public policy, or related field is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of local, state and/or federal food safety and body art codes, rules and regulations.
  • Experience in training or workforce development.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and administering a specific project or program for a City department.
  • Serving as the administrative supervisor on projects or programs.
  • Planning, assigning, supervising, and reviewing activities of subordinate personnel.
  • Monitoring the project or program's operating budget and assisting in the annual preparation of same.
  • Designing, implementing, and monitoring procedures utilized in program evaluation.
  • Developing and securing commitments from other City departments and agencies to provide services to program participants.
  • Providing technical assistance or reviewing program policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining current information and overseeing the preparation of project status reports.
  • Preparing financial and narrative reports and program applications.
  • Communicating project/program status and information to municipal officials and/or public and private entities.
  • Supervising employees assigned to the respective project.
  • Coordinating and/or teaching food safety education classes, including ServSafe and Person-in-Charge (PIC) certification courses.
  • Assisting with preparation for Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and Ohio Department of Health (ODH) audits, including developing corrective action plans, monitoring compliance, and ensuring documentation accuracy.
  • Attending roundtable meetings, professional trainings, and conferences to remain current on regulatory code updates and best practices.
  • Training and onboarding new staff in food safety inspections and environmental health inspections in schools.
  • Conducting annual staff performance evaluations of direct reports.
  • Scheduling and coordinating both internal and external staff training opportunities.
  • Developing, updating, and maintaining training materials related to food inspections and regulatory compliance.
  • Overseeing annual licensing processes for body art establishments.
  • Conducting annual inspections of licensed facilities.
  • Investigating complaints and conducting inspections for temporary events.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
  • Maintaining accurate inspection and licensing records.
