About The Position

The Environmental Operator is responsible for the operation, light maintenance, and control of environmental pollution control systems, processes, machinery, and equipment, as well as wastewater treatment plants and process/potable water treatment plants. This role ensures compliance with all state and federal environmental laws, permits, and regulations. It is integral to the implementation of the Environmental Program in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and Company requirements. Key responsibilities include operating and controlling process water, wastewater treatment plants, and pump stations to meet permit requirements. The operator monitors industrial discharges, taking corrective actions to maintain compliance. They control operations and monitor system/equipment performance using computerized systems and metrics, performing complex troubleshooting to prevent operational interruptions. The role requires knowledge of utility systems, with an emphasis on water reuse and chemical treatment for boilers and cooling towers. Sampling and analysis (grab and composite) are performed to make operational adjustments and fulfill reporting requirements. Data analysis and necessary actions to maintain operations are also key. The operator prepares and adds reagents to treatment plants, manages reagent inventory, and ensures proper storage according to company requirements. They prepare purchase requisitions and follow up on necessary materials and services, liaising with suppliers for quotes. Coordination of sludge removal, sample collection, and calibrations are essential for plant compliance and function. Instrument calibration, standardization, and cleaning are performed as required. Data collection from pollutant sources and control equipment is necessary. Light maintenance of equipment and instruments in the area is expected, along with maintaining assigned tools in good condition. The work area must be kept clean and organized. Technical assistance is provided to other areas and contracted personnel, and effective communication with clients is maintained. Shift reports are prepared according to company standards. The operator ensures that specifications for parts, products, projects, and services include environmental considerations and that new equipment selection prioritizes efficiency and energy conservation. Participation and promotion of activities within the Operational Excellence Team for continuous improvement (5’s, workplace audits, T cards, Idea cards, Big C, Tip Plan, Communication Center, etc.) are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • Completed training or course in the operation of wastewater treatment plants category IV and potable water treatment plants category I.
  • Associate Degree in Natural Sciences, Engineering, or Industrial Mechanics.
  • License: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator IV and Potable Water Treatment Plant Operator I.
  • Two to four years of experience as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator IV.
  • One to three years of experience as a Potable Water Treatment Plant Operator I.
  • Knowledge and experience in Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Knowledge and experience in the operation of utilities in an industrial environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Journeyman Electrician License (preferible).

Responsibilities

  • Operate and control process water, wastewater treatment plants, and pump stations to meet permit requirements.

  • Control operations and monitor system and equipment performance through computerized systems and metrics.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting to maintain operations and prevent interruptions.
  • Operate utility systems, with emphasis on water reuse and chemical treatment for boilers and cooling towers.
  • Take grab and composite samples and perform physical and chemical analyses for operational adjustments.
  • Coordinate sample analyses for required permit reports.
  • Prepare, compile, document, archive, and maintain analysis logs, flow readings, and daily event logs.
  • Analyze data and take action as required to maintain operations.
  • Prepare and add reagents to process water and wastewater treatment plants as needed.
  • Maintain an inventory of reagents and ensure sufficient quantities for plant operations.
  • Store reagents according to company requirements.
  • Prepare purchase requisitions and/or refer for the purchase of necessary reagents, materials, and services, and follow up on them.
  • Establish contact with suppliers and obtain quotes for reagents, materials, tools, services, etc.
  • Coordinate services such as sludge removal, sample collection, and calibrations to maintain treatment plant compliance and function.
  • Verify instrument calibrations and standardize and clean instruments according to required frequency.
  • Collect data from pollutant sources and environmental pollution control equipment.
  • Perform light maintenance on equipment and instruments in the area.
  • Ensure assigned tools are maintained in good condition.
  • Keep the work area and surroundings clean and organized.
  • Provide technical assistance to other areas and to personnel contracted by the Company.
  • Maintain effective communication with clients.
  • Prepare shift reports following company-defined standards.
  • Ensure specifications for parts, products, projects, and services include environmental considerations.
  • Consider efficiency and energy conservation in the selection of new equipment.
  • Participate in and promote activities with the Operational Excellence Team focused on continuous improvement (e.g., 5’s, workplace audits, T cards, Idea cards, Big C, Tip Plan, Communication Center).
