About The Position

The Sr. Environmental Operator is responsible for providing leadership and support to other Environmental Operators on their shift. Acts as the main point of contact for other departments when environmental needs arise during their shift. Operates process wastewater treatment; monitors the thermal oxidizers; evaluates and manages stormwater discharges; monitors the groundwater treatment system operation; troubleshoots utility systems; and collects, inspects, and disposes of site generated wastes. Performs analyses to monitor performance of treatment systems and document compliance with permitted discharges by performing the following duties detailed below.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and 5 years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to work effectively with other departments and outside agencies for waste transfers, waste shipments, spill collection, and training.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, dilutions, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic math, algebra, and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation & RCRA Hazardous Waste Management (HAZWOPPER) Certification required within six months of hire date

  • Knowledge of and experience with environmental regulations in Colorado and at the Federal level, including wastewater, air emissions, hazardous waste, groundwater, and stormwater
  • Ability to accurately and thoroughly record data as it relates to FOPs, PJTs, EGMs, and other regulatory documentation including Quality Assurance Systems. Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to analyze problems, determine root cause, and develop and implement solutions
  • Strong mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot equipment problems
  • Strong interpersonal skills and knowledge of appropriate procedures to effectively work with other departments to support their environmental needs
  • Ability to effectively communicate with outside regulatory agency representatives, such as inspectors and enforcement bodies in a way that supports a strong working relationship and minimizes regulatory risk
  • Ability to use a harness to access high locations, and use break flange connections at some locations
  • Use of database and spreadsheets including data entry, report compilation, and data review to ensure compliance
  • Use of computer systems such as RS3, DeltaV, and custom computer packages to manage processes and monitoring equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of hazardous waste rules/regulations, disposal options, audit procedures, Corden standards for acceptable handling and disposal of waste, and proper documentation
  • High level of technical troubleshooting skills in wastewater treatment
  • Ability to drive and operate the vacuum truck
  • Ability to train others in the technical aspects of the treatment processes
  • Employee is frequently required to stand; walk; work with hands; reach above shoulder height; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell.
  • Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in Wastewater, Incineration, or Hazardous Waste Management is strongly preferred.
  • Rescue Certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform monitoring, troubleshooting, recording, and analysis of treated and untreated wastewater to meet requirements of the industrial pretreatment permit. Performance of analyses involves the use of a variety of analytical equipment, multi-step procedures, as well as tracking QA/QC for these tests.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot the thermal oxidizers to maximize uptime. Assist in performing preventative maintenance including preparation for service, cleaning of equipment, filter changes, and other duties as required
  • Manage hazardous and nonhazardous plant waste. Including but not limited to shipping and receiving, storing, and tracking of all waste according to all regulations and requirements. Evaluate wastes for disposal options, identify labeling requirements, and assign disposal profiles
  • Ensure area housekeeping and operability is maintained and verify proper inventories of lab reagents and required equipment; and see that they are ordered as needed
  • Monitor operation of site utilities on evenings and weekends; provide back-up support for utilities tasks as assigned, troubleshooting identified problems; and assist with re-starting after outages
  • Perform storm water discharges, odor investigations, and spill/release cleanups for disposal
  • Follow approved methods to collect, label, and submit samples required by the wastewater permit for external lab analysis
  • Perform preventative maintenance on lab and treatment equipment; and coordinate repairs and improvements to these systems
  • Review modified analytical and work procedures for approval; ensure documentation used in area is current with document revision
  • Personnel will need to periodically provide coverage on other shifts, including both night and day shifts as required by needs of the area
