Position Summary: Operates wastewater treatment system and disposal equipment in wastewater treatment plant to control flow and processing of wastewater by performing the following below duties. This position has the responsibility to comply with Maine Department of Environmental Protection permits/ licenses, facility safety work rules, and SQF requirements where applicable. The operator will, at all times, reinforce Safety as a Core Value.

Requirements

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • State Wastewater Treatment System Operator Class II license, or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of Database software; Internet software; Manufacturing software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
  • Mechanical aptitude is important in order to maintain equipment and trouble shoot system issues.
  • Must be able to work outdoors while monitoring, servicing and operating wastewater system in all types of weather conditions.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to sit and use hands to handle or feel.
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.
  • Must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of process water.
  • Observes variations in production plant operating conditions and interprets water meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
  • Responsible for monitoring the spray irrigation fields, as well as the snow making system to control discharge according to the facility permit.
  • Licensed to operate company vehicles and ability to use and operate department utility vehicle.
  • Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of process water through the entire treatment plant system by managing filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
  • Maintains a log of operations with daily records of flow meter readings, gauge readings, rain fall, temperature and where water is being properly discharged. The operator will work with production personnel in monitoring water usage, identifying excess water usage, and escalating issues where repairs are needed.
  • Manages universal waste building including scheduling pickups.
  • Collects water samples for submission to outside lab. This requires proper record keeping, sample identification, and other documentation.
  • Ability to conduct pH testing, settleable solids test, Oxygen percent reading with various meters and lab equipment.
  • Work with various vendors and contractors as needed to maintain the treatment plant and spray irrigation areas.
  • Collect and submit data as needed (with appropriate training) via computer through a variety of facility web based programs.
  • Assist with procurement and transportation of raw materials for the Production Facility.
  • Follow all SQF principles pertinent to your position as specified by the SQF Practitioner.
  • All food safety and human safety concerns need to be reported to appropriate personnel such as shift lead, shift supervisor, QA technician, Safety Manager, FSQ Manager, etc.
  • Accountable for a safe and healthy workplace for everyone. Adhere to all safety policies and procedures and incorporate safety and health in all jobs and tasks.
  • Adhere to Quality work practices, follow GMP’s, maintain sanitary conditions and ensure that product quality is maintained. Report to management any conditions or practices that may adversely affect food safety and quality.
