About The Position

The Position Incumbent works under the direction of the Sheriff’s (DCSO) Court Services Bureau (CSB) Captain or designee, providing security and safety to employees and visitors of the Hall of Justice, the Civic Center, and the Justice Center. Essential Functions Monitor entrance screening stations and conduct screening of incoming persons/belongings and packages using x-ray scanners, metal detectors, visual detection, and other accepted and appropriate security practices and equipment. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public. Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment. Detect and confiscate weapons or contraband and detain the individual(s) advising Sworn Supervisor. Advise on finding legal but inappropriate items (e.g. pocket knife), disposing of the item in locked containers or returning the item to vehicle prior to entry. Use less than lethal force protecting employees and visitors. Provide information and directions to locations (e.g. courtrooms) within the Hall of Justice, the Civic Center, and the Justice Center. Respond to public and employee questions within scope of knowledge, expertise and authority in a courteous and professional manner. Render immediate first aid and/or cardio/pulmonary measures, in strict adherence to established policies and procedures summoning appropriate medical personnel and notifying DCSO. Assist with emergencies (e.g. fires or fire alarms, weather related emergencies, bombs or bomb threats, disturbances, mentally ill persons, other threatening or exigent situation), summoning medical personnel and/or notifying the Sworn DCSO Supervisor. Report hazardous, threatening, suspicious or potentially dangerous occurrences to Supervisor. Become familiar with Nebraska laws and regulations, City ordinances, the 4th Judicial District Court rules, and other pertinent rules, laws, or regulations pertaining to security operations at the Hall of Justice, Civic Center, and Justice Center. Prepare and maintain various records, reports and other department documents (e.g. Daily Activity Logs). Operate a two-way radio maintaining communication with department employees advising of a security breech, disturbance, potentially dangerous situation or other threatening or exigent circumstance. Demonstrate the safe and proper use of security equipment and skills (e.g. electronic control device, handcuffs, defensive tactics). Use tact and control when dealing with combative, angry, or mentally ill persons. Read and adhere to department General Orders. Maintain job knowledge and skills (e.g. training, seminars, webinars, meetings, conferences, continuing education). Report to work with regular, consistent attendance. Perform other duties as assigned and directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Six (6) months of law enforcement or security experience involving contact with the public required.
  • Basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire and maintained throughout employment required.
  • Completion of a Defensive Tactics Course and maintain throughout employment required.
  • Completion of an Electronic Control Devices Course and maintain throughout employment required.
  • Entrance Screening Training as determined by the CSB Captain.
  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check, physical assessment, and conditional offer drug screen required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and work experience may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.
