About The Position

We are looking for a motivated Enterprise Technology Analyst Entry - IT GIS to join our team. This role is ideal for someone early in their GIS career who is eager to grow, learn, and contribute to a highly technical enterprise environment. Whether you are just starting out or have a couple of years of experience, this is a great opportunity to build your skills along side a highly experienced team that supports enterprise GIS systems Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). As part of our IT GIS team, you will help maintain, support, and improve our enterprise GIS platform, working on everything from system administration and application support to data management and integrations with other business systems. You will gain hands-on experience with Esri technologies, enterprise databases, and cloud-based environments, while learning best practices in security, performance, and system reliability. Under close supervision, performs the more basic business processes and technical support utilizing SMUD's various enterprise and other integrated technology solutions in the areas of design, configuration, operation, maintenance, and enhancement; assists in serving as a functional resource to the user community to ensure reliability, accessibility and effectiveness to meet the needs of the business unit overall.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • At least one (1+) year of progressively responsible relevant work experience in the areas of day-to-day design and maintenance of enterprise applications, OR at least 6 months as a SMUD Intern working within a relevant area, OR at least three (3+) years within a business unit with broad and deep knowledge of business processes and/or technology.
  • Concepts of enterprise applications systems design, configuration and functionality; concepts of the system development lifecycle; concepts of implementation strategies; concepts of data modeling, structured query language, scripting, report design, administration, data maintenance and retrieval; (familiar with) complex computer systems and resources, electronic records, database administration; techniques and practices for resolving technical issues; standard business policies and/or procedures.
  • Understand complex and/or controversial policies, regulations, procedures, and/or activities internally/externally; assess procedures/systems and assist in the development/implementation of operational improvements; recognize how a system should work under ideal conditions; participate in evaluating and resolving complex technical issues; participate in generating viable alternatives to problems; utilize reasoning and analysis to identify the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches; read and interpret plans, diagrams and specifications; prioritize own work assignments to meet expected timeframes; assess business processes; participate in matching user requirements to system capabilities; assist in developing detailed specifications; recognize/select system integration points; assist in developing testing criteria and conducting testing; effectively work on one’s own and/or in a team; assist in troubleshooting user and system problems; assist in performing ad-hoc reporting and changes to reports and forms; stay abreast of new IT technology, tools and methods to support and develop business applications; utilize a personal computer, systems, mobile device and software relevant to the job; communicate effectively orally and in writing internally/externally; assist in coordinating optimization efforts; establish and maintain effective internal/external working relationships and work effectively in diverse teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field; or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Understanding of core GIS concepts, including spatial data, coordinate systems, and map services

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for the enterprise GIS platform, including ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, and related applications
  • Assist with system administration tasks such as user management, service publishing, and performance monitoring
  • Support integration of GIS with other enterprise systems (e.g., work management, asset management,customer service tools)
  • Perform data updates, quality checks, and process automation to maintain accurate and reliable spatial data
  • Troubleshoot issues reported by business users and coordinate resolutions with the GIS team
  • Contribute to documentation, workflows, and standard operating procedures
  • Participate in testing, upgrades, and deployment of GIS applications and services
  • Learn to design and configure various enterprise technology solutions to support business units; develop designs and define user requirements by collaborating with process owners; address integration issues; develop testing criteria and conduct testing; plan implementation strategies; and communicate technical information to the user community.
  • Participate in efforts to assess the need for modification and enhancement to existing enterprise applications by evaluating effectiveness of current technology; guide user group forums; identify needed changes and enhancements; perform workflow and process assessments; identify impacts to business processes; revise user and system requirements; design modifications; prepare change notices; integrate modifications; develop testing criteria and conduct testing; and provide technical consultation and solutions.
  • Support efforts to provide overall effectiveness for users; champion and share key practices; provide technical support and user training in the optimal use of enterprise applications systems; troubleshoot user obstacles and provide support; provide technical consultation and options to address issues; and troubleshoot system problems.
  • Learn to provide business units with access to data, analytics, visualizations required to run and optimize their operation; design user reports, intelligence and visualizations to help business units run; produce standard and custom analytics; develop ad-hoc queries; modify standard forms and analytics; and work with users to define reporting and analytic needs.
  • Assist and support projects and initiatives from a functional and/or technical perspective; refer problems to supervision/management where solutions are not readily achievable; participate in planning, monitoring and revising schedules, work plans, expenditures, and assignments related to the functional/technical department budget; and assist in the functional or technical preparation of procurement or bid documents, evaluation of proposals, and recommendation of awards to contractors or vendors.
  • Perform other related duties as needed to include working outside of typical business hours when necessary.
