About The Position

The City of Edmonton is seeking a technical professional for its Traffic Operations team. As an Engineering Technologist I, this role is crucial for maintaining the safety and accessibility of city streets for all modes of transportation. The position involves applying technical expertise to manage traffic control for construction detours and permanent markings, contributing to a safe, functional, and reliable transportation network. This role provides technical support for temporary traffic control across the city's roadway network. Responsibilities include reviewing and approving road use permits to ensure public safety during construction projects and special events. The technologist will collaborate with engineers, field staff, and community partners within an assigned geographical area to manage traffic flow. Daily tasks involve drafting engineering drawings, preparing cost estimates, and conducting field inspections to verify traffic control compliance. The role also involves communicating with the public and city leadership, ensuring adherence to bylaws and safety guidelines for smooth city operations.

Requirements

  • Completion of a two (2) year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a related field
  • Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience specifically in traffic control activities
  • Ability to create technical drawings and calculate costs for traffic control infrastructure
  • Proficiency in reviewing field conditions to ensure compliance with safety standards and guidelines
  • Skilled in coordinating complex projects, managing road closures, and resolving conflicts between multiple site activities
  • Excellent verbal and written skills for drafting professional responses and facilitating meetings with various interested and/or affected parties
  • Highly developed analytical skills to manage emergent work and resolve hazardous field conditions
  • Understanding of road construction techniques, materials, and processes
  • Ability to communicate effectively through written reports and verbal solutions for complex issues
  • Apply working knowledge of the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Highway Design Guide and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
  • Exceptional problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to handle variable workloads and emergency projects
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, meet short timelines, and interact professionally with difficult or demanding collaborators
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates are able to be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and high-visibility gear

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with roadway designers, project managers, and engineering consultants to make critical decisions regarding temporary traffic control for various projects to ensure the safety and efficiency of the transportation system
  • Create traffic accommodation plans (TAPs) for detours, which involves drafting engineering drawings and preparing cost estimates for installation or removal
  • Perform regular field inspections to assess and review temporary traffic controls, following up with the required documentation and action items in accordance with established guidelines
  • Provide essential guidance and direction to field crews and external collaborators on the proper placement of traffic control devices to meet rigorous safety standards
  • Approve temporary road use permits for on-street construction and detour requests by applying technical knowledge of construction techniques and traffic flow requirements
  • Represent the branch at pre-construction meetings and community sessions to determine traffic control requirements based on roadway capacities
  • Contribute to the updating of traffic bylaws, the Manual of Temporary Traffic Control, and engineering standards related to signs and pavement markings
  • Address inquiries from interested and affected parties, including the general public and city leadership, by ensuring all correspondence is professional and contains in-depth information
