About The Position

This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the design, maintenance, and management of city roadways. The role involves conducting field studies to determine traffic volume, speed, effectiveness of signals, adequacy of lighting, and other factors influencing traffic conditions, under the direction of a traffic engineer. The technician will investigate, collect, process, and analyze data from traffic and safety inquiries received from the public, city officials, and state agencies. A key responsibility includes reviewing traffic control plans to issue permits for special events and for utility and construction work that affects the street network, providing assistance with plan preparation or revision as necessary. The role also requires visiting development and work sites to assess project effects on traffic, the adequacy of traffic control plans, and to suggest improvements. Interaction with the public to answer traffic-related questions, respond to Q alerts, or discuss traffic ordinances, plans, policies, and procedures is also part of the job. The technician will operate counters to record data on vehicular and pedestrian traffic volume, type, and movement, and inspect residential driveways and outdoor café permits for compliance with plans. Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the accepted principles of traffic operations.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal operation.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in problem solving and decision making.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with the public in order to answer traffic-related questions, respond to Q alerts, or discuss traffic ordinances, plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Operate counters and record data in order to assess the volume, type, and movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at specific times.
  • Inspect residential driveways for compliance with plans.
  • Inspect outdoor café permits for compliance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
