About The Position

The Municipality of Clarington is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Traffic Technician to join our Public Works team. Reporting to the Traffic Supervisor, you will play a key role in enhancing roadway safety and supporting municipal traffic management initiatives. This position focuses on traffic data analysis, technical studies, and developing evidence-based solutions to improve traffic operations and road safety across the municipality.

Requirements

  • Diploma from a 3-year Community College program in Transportation Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 1 year of progressive, related experience.
  • Strong knowledge of: Ontario Traffic Manuals (OTM), Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) guidelines, Municipal Act, and Highway Traffic Act.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid First Aid and WHMIS certification.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence and clean driver’s abstract.
  • Physically able to lift equipment, climb ladders, and use basic tools.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • O.A.C.E.T.T. certification (Technician/Technologist) is an asset.
  • Experience with GIS (ESRI) and traffic software/tools is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct traffic studies and analyze data to recommend improvements.
  • Support development of traffic management strategies and initiatives.
  • Identify, implement, and maintain traffic calming measures.
  • Operate and manage electronic traffic data collection equipment (e.g., radar boards, counters, cameras).
  • Assist with the Traffic Calming Policy program, including coordination and implementation.
  • Prepare reports and contribute to presentations for Council and the public.
  • Manage traffic sign inventory and retro-reflectivity program, including inspections, budgeting, and replacements.
  • Support overall Traffic Division operations and safety initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including those specific to the department.
