About The Position

The Engineering Tech V will plan or assist in planning test activities, define test requirements, execute tests using appropriate instrumentation, analyze data, and document recommendations. This role involves identifying, diagnosing, and resolving complex issues related to VoIP services, network integrity, and PC hardware/software, while also guiding technicians through advanced troubleshooting. The position requires managing and resolving work orders and change requests for Cable Plant, Network, and VoIP systems, ensuring timely and high-quality completion. Effective communication of technical information to various audiences is crucial for supporting operational needs and mission schedules. The role includes configuring, deploying, and troubleshooting Cisco network switches and wireless access points, maintaining documentation for these deployments, and installing, configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting UPS systems. The Engineering Tech V will support daily operational activities, follow established procedures for change management, configuration management, and incident response, and coordinate with various GSFC organizations to ensure compliance with operational standards. Participation in scheduled maintenance, facility power events, infrastructure upgrades, and mission-critical restoration efforts is also expected, along with providing mentorship and guidance to junior technicians.

Requirements

  • AA or AS degree in engineering technology, information technology, electronics, or a related technical field.
  • 8–10 years of progressive technical experience supporting IT infrastructure, electronics, network systems, or engineering operations.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing and resolving complex VoIP, network, and PC hardware/software issues.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco switches and wireless access points, including configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing work orders and change requests in a structured service-delivery or ITSM environment.
  • Ability to interpret engineering specifications, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to plan and conduct tests using technical instrumentation and analyze resulting data.
  • Experience installing and maintaining UPS systems, monitoring load, and validating power distribution.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate successfully with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to follow GSFC or equivalent federal facility operational, safety, and configuration procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, IT, electronics, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting NASA GSFC operational environments, infrastructure, or mission-critical systems.
  • Familiarity with GSFC change management, facility access controls, and service-delivery workflows.
  • Experience with cable plant operations, network infrastructure installations, and facility-based technical support.
  • Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Security+, CCNA, or similar.
  • Experience creating or maintaining network documentation including layouts, diagrams, and rack elevations.
  • Experience with wireless site surveys or predictive design tools.
  • Experience supporting secure or controlled technical environments.
  • Experience leading or mentoring technicians on complex technical tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, diagnose, and resolve complex issues involving VoIP services, network integrity, and PC hardware/software while guiding technicians through advanced troubleshooting.
  • Manage and resolve work orders and change requests involving Cable Plant, Network, and VoIP systems, ensuring timely and high-quality completion consistent with GSFC service-delivery processes.
  • Communicate technical information clearly and effectively to technicians, stakeholders, and end users to support GSFC operational needs and mission schedules.
  • Configure, deploy, and troubleshoot Cisco network switches including VLANs, trunking, QoS, port security, and device monitoring across GSFC buildings and mission-support facilities.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot Cisco wireless access points, ensuring proper controller integration, firmware maintenance, and wireless coverage across GSFC campuses.
  • Maintain documentation for switch and AP deployments including port assignments, labeling, rack elevations, and physical mapping in alignment with GSFC standards.
  • Install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot UPS systems; verify battery health, load capacity, firmware compliance, and proper power distribution for GSFC network and compute environments.
  • Maintain documentation for UPS deployments including load mapping, lifecycle tracking, and center wide power-distribution requirements.
  • Support daily GSFC operational activities across buildings, labs, controlled access areas, mission environments, and remote sites.
  • Follow GSFC change management, configuration management, and incident response procedures, ensuring accuracy in service management systems.
  • Coordinate with Mission Directorates, Facility Managers, Network Operations, Cybersecurity, and other GSFC service organizations to ensure compliance with center wide operational standards.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance windows, facility power events, infrastructure upgrades, and mission-critical restoration efforts when needed.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior technicians while upholding safety, technical, and quality standards.
