This position serves as a lead project inspector in the Division 4 Smithfield Resident Engineer’s office, supporting engineers in the daily contract administration of construction projects. The role involves monitoring project work and materials for compliance with specifications and contractual provisions. The employee will supervise and train lower-level technicians, including Department employees and Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) staff, and address project staffing needs. Responsibilities include performing and reviewing project documentation, ensuring accuracy in material sampling, testing, documentation, and estimates. The position resolves daily constructability issues, ensures traffic control and contractor operations adhere to the contract, specifications, plans, and standard drawings. It also monitors contractor progress for timely project completion, compliance with subcontractors, and DBE and Title VI compliance. Communication and coordination with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners are key. The role involves significant decision-making and judgment, and assisting higher-level engineers with other duties as instructed. This position requires work nights and weekends as needed, experience with computers or electronic tablets, good communication skills, and the ability to make engineering decisions independently. Employees must apply NCDOT safety standards, may be exposed to construction hazards, and will work outdoors in varying conditions. Moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds, is expected. Safety-toed shoes are required.
