About The Position

This position is for a vacant Engineering Specialist I in the Western Field Operations groups within the Structures Management Unit at the NC Department of Transportation. The role requires a moderate to advanced understanding of drafting techniques for highway-related structures, including design, rehabilitation, preservation, or critical repair projects. The work involves preparing contract plans for various types of structural projects, load rating existing structures using advanced software, and communicating engineering concepts to internal and external partners.

Requirements

  • Moderate to advanced understanding of drafting techniques for highway related structures including design, rehabilitation, preservation, or critical repair projects.
  • Ability to read and understand old designs and plans, structure inspection reports, and field scoping notes.
  • Ability to climb bridge structures and scaffolds.
  • Ability to keep accurate notes and records.
  • Knowledge and ability in drafting and the use of a computer.
  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing contract plans for Preservation, Rehabilitation, and Repair (PRR) and Emergency repairs for Existing Structures, which involves interpreting old designs, inspection reports, and field notes, and may require some field work.
  • Prepare contract plans for new or replacement structures, including bridges and culverts, in accordance with AASHTO Specifications and the Structures Management Unit Design Manual, policies, and procedures. This may involve complex alignments and design requirements, and communication with the engineer of record.
  • Load rating existing structures by studying bridge inspection reports, evaluating structural conditions, and using advanced software to determine safe load capacities and evaluate maintenance proposals for upgrades and repairs.
  • Communicating moderately complex engineering concepts verbally and in writing with colleagues, other NCDOT units, and Division personnel to ensure timely and organized completion of work and projects.
