About The Position

As Engineering Manager for Workforce Payments, you will lead a team building the core computation layer behind Justworks’ payroll, money movement, and tax calculation products. The team is central to the platform’s financial accuracy and compliance. You will guide technical decisions and identify projects that support business goals, including scaling tax and money movement capabilities, improving financial ledger integrity, and creating robust platform interfaces for payroll data. The role combines hands-on coding with technical leadership, mentoring, and team development.

You will work with engineering, design, and product partners to prioritize, schedule, and deliver projects, and partner with Product on long-term strategy and quarterly roadmaps. You will coordinate with teams across and outside Engineering, mentor and guide direct reports, and attract, hire, develop, and retain a high-performing engineering team. You will also promote technical excellence, collaboration, empathy for internal stakeholders, and efficient workflows. Other related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience as a software engineer working on production web applications.
• At least 1 year of experience managing a team of engineers.
• Demonstrable experience prioritizing, crafting, and achieving plans.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to grasp and explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• High levels of empathy and interpersonal skills.
• Solid understanding of core web development technologies, including data structures, data stores, algorithms, distributed systems, and common patterns around these frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Lead the team building the core computation layer for payroll, money movement, and tax calculation products.
• Make technical decisions and identify projects that advance business goals, including scaling tax and money movement capabilities, strengthening financial ledger integrity, and developing platform interfaces for payroll data.
• Work with Engineers, Design, and Product Managers to prioritize, schedule, and execute projects and ship features.
• Partner with Product to define and execute the team’s long-term strategy and quarterly roadmap, including setting goals and measuring progress and success.
• Communicate and coordinate with other teams to understand requirements and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Mentor engineers and foster technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
• Provide technical and non-technical guidance to direct reports.
• Attract, hire, develop, and retain a high-performing team of engineers.
• Drive sound technical decision-making and lead technical conversations across Justworks.
• Build empathy for internal stakeholders and improve user experiences and workflow efficiency.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
