Engineering Manager, Atlas (Spatial Systems)

Verkada•San Mateo, CA
•$220,000 - $315,000

About The Position

Verkada is hiring an Engineering Manager for Atlas, its founding engineering team responsible for the Maps mandate. Atlas builds the spatial systems—including the core rendering engine, tiling infrastructure, and collaborative APIs—that power an interactive digital twin and serve as a shared platform for Verkada’s product teams. The manager will help keep maps performant, unified, and collaborative as the platform expands across more than eight product lines. This is a zero-to-one, player-coach role. The manager will build the initial spatial system, deliver its image pipeline, establish collaborative editing standards, and lead a modular, plugin-based architecture with SDKs and APIs for product teams. The role also oversees processing blueprints, CAD files, and high-resolution imagery into structured vector data, and includes building and mentoring a founding team of four to six engineers. The manager will partner with other engineering managers to coordinate technical boundaries and deliver a consistent experience across Verkada’s product suite.

Requirements

  • Experience thriving in the high-ambiguity phase of a zero-to-one build.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate a high-level vision into a functioning platform quickly.
  • Ability to negotiate technical boundaries with other product teams and support a consistent user experience.
  • Experience leading development of highly complex, state-heavy web or mobile applications.
  • Understanding of rendering-performance trade-offs involving thousands of interactive entities.
  • Deep grasp of modern frontend architectures, such as React, WebGL/WebGPU, or Swift/Kotlin.
  • Experience building sophisticated data pipelines that handle unstructured data at scale.
  • Ability to turn raw inputs into structured, queryable information using methods such as machine learning, ETL, or geometric algorithms.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a player-coach and build the first version of the Spatial System from the ground up.
  • Own initial delivery of the image pipeline and set technical standards for collaborative editing protocols.
  • Lead the design of a modular, plugin-based architecture.
  • Define SDKs and APIs that let product teams overlay specialized data onto maps.
  • Oversee systems that transform blueprints, CAD files, and high-resolution imagery into clean, topologically sound vector data using machine learning and automated processing.
  • Hire and mentor the founding Atlas team of four to six engineers.
  • Establish engineering culture and practices, including code review standards and architectural RFC processes.
  • Serve as the primary technical partner for the Maps mandate and negotiate technical boundaries with other product engineering managers.
  • Ensure the map remains a performant, unified, collaborative experience across product lines.
