About The Position

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform used by companies to accept payments, grow revenue, and pursue new business opportunities. Its mission is to increase the GDP of the internet. Self Serve Direct Onboarding helps businesses start using Stripe products quickly and confidently. The team builds self-service experiences that guide users through providing business information and completing required checks, translating complex financial, regulatory, and verification requirements into clear steps. Its shared product activation experience aims to reduce repeated information and make onboarding easier for product teams to integrate. The team is improving onboarding for users interacting through a user interface, working with AI agents, or delegating onboarding to agents. The Engineering Manager will set engineering direction with Product and Design, develop the team, and balance improvements to current activation with foundations for agent-led onboarding. The role calls for sound product judgment about experimentation, reusable foundations, and measuring progress through faster activation, fewer repeated steps, and reliable outcomes. The manager will also align teams across Stripe, resolve dependencies, and coach engineers while giving them meaningful ownership.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of engineering management experience, directly managing and growing teams of 5 or more engineers building and shipping products at scale.
  • At least 8 years of full-time software development experience.
  • Experience building user-facing products, with strong user empathy and product judgment.
  • Experience turning ambiguous goals into clear priorities and delivering work that depends on multiple teams.
  • A track record of coaching engineers, supporting their growth, and building an environment of candid feedback, inclusion, and shared ownership.
  • Technical depth to guide architecture and make pragmatic tradeoffs across user interfaces, APIs, backend workflows, and production reliability.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to align technical and nontechnical partners with different priorities and constraints.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience simplifying complex customer journeys and using data, user feedback, and experimentation to evaluate outcomes.
  • Experience modernizing an established product or architecture while continuing to ship improvements and maintain production reliability.
  • Experience shipping AI-assisted workflows or agent-facing APIs, with clear approaches to evaluating quality and correctness.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering planning and execution in close partnership with Product and Design.
  • Shape the team’s strategy and roadmap, aligning partners across product engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations.
  • Own delivery from problem definition through rollout and ongoing operation, using experimentation to improve activation while maintaining risk controls.
  • Uphold high engineering standards across the team’s codebases and development practices.
  • Turn ambiguous goals into focused plans, resolve dependencies, and balance new capabilities with operational health.
  • Coach and mentor engineers, provide candid feedback, and support career development tailored to their goals.
  • Partner with Recruiting to hire engineers and build a diverse, high-performing team.
