About The Position

Sunrock is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead all engineering activities associated with its growing portfolio of distributed generation Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This team member reports directly to senior leadership and will oversee engineering from project origination through design, procurement, construction support, commissioning, and operational handover. The role will work closely with commercial and development teams, EPC partners, equipment suppliers, utilities, and external engineering consultants to ensure projects are technically sound, commercially viable, and execution ready. The successful candidate will help establish engineering standards, improve project delivery processes, and provide technical leadership as Sunrock continues to scale its battery storage platform.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, including experience with BESS, distributed generation, renewable energy, power systems, or related energy infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of power systems, interconnection, protection systems, and battery technologies.
  • Familiarity with PVsyst or other PV/BESS energy and revenue modeling software or processes.
  • Understanding of significant BESS related state and federal incentives and markets.
  • Experience working with EPC contractors, OEMs, utilities, and independent engineering firms.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 855, and applicable utility standards.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, technical processes, or best practices for a growing project portfolio.
  • Experience managing teams with direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering activities across a distributed generation BESS portfolio.
  • Develop engineering strategies and best practices to support project execution.
  • Manage internal engineering resources and external engineering consultants.
  • Support project development through technical feasibility assessments and system design.
  • Evaluate battery technologies, PCS, EMS, transformers, switchgear, and balance-of-plant solutions. Lead equipment selection and technical evaluations.
  • Review electrical studies including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, grounding, and protection coordination studies.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks throughout project development.
  • Manage detailed engineering through IFC design.
  • Coordinate engineering deliverables with EPC contractors and equipment manufacturers.
  • Review design packages for quality, constructability, code compliance, and cost optimization.
  • Support procurement and vendor technical evaluations.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and energization.
