About The Position

Hover is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead Mobile Core, the platform team responsible for reliability, performance, and developer experience for the Hover Pro mobile app. Used by more than 300,000 contractors and insurance professionals, the app supports property scans using camera and LiDAR, offline inspections, and uploads that power Hover’s 3D models. The role’s initial goals include increasing crash-free sessions from 99.9% to 99.99% and upload success to 99.99%. This is a player-coach position on a React Native, Expo, and TypeScript stack, with technical decisions affecting all mobile teams. The manager will lead platform reliability and performance, architecture, mobile foundations, CI/CD, releases, testing, and partnerships with mobile QA, Capture SDK, and backend teams. The role also includes coaching and growing a senior distributed team. The expected time allocation is approximately 50% design and code reviews, debugging, and some coding; 30% people leadership; and 20% cross-team planning. Hover has hubs in San Francisco and New York City. Employees who live within 50 miles of an office are expected to work from that local office at least three times per week. Fully remote roles are not currently being considered. The full-time US base salary range is $227,000–$280,000 annually, with pay determined in part by location, skills, experience, and education or training.

Requirements

  • Deep, hands-on experience shipping a React Native and TypeScript app in production at scale.
  • Experience leading engineers as an engineering manager or as a tech lead with people responsibilities such as coaching, hiring, and performance management.
  • Enough native iOS and/or Android expertise to make sound decisions involving native modules, camera and background tasks, OS lifecycle, and app store releases.
  • A track record of owning shared mobile foundations used by other teams, including CI/CD, release management, and test automation.
  • Experience using Sentry, New Relic, or similar tools to reduce crash rates and turn data into priorities.
  • Practical use of AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor or Claude, and experience helping a team use them effectively.
  • Clear written communication across time zones and with non-engineering partners.
  • A habit of finishing what you start.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with camera, AR or LiDAR, or large media uploads, including integrating native SDKs into React Native.
  • Experience with offline-first sync, such as WatermelonDB or Apollo, or enterprise mobile needs such as MDM/Intune and WCAG accessibility.
  • Experience in construction, insurance, or field-services software, or leading distributed or contractor teams.

Responsibilities

  • Own reliability and performance for the Hover Pro app, using Sentry fingerprinting, code-owner routing, and device-vitals dashboards to turn metrics into actionable priorities.
  • Lead architecture decisions across React Native (New Architecture), Expo, TypeScript, and native iOS and Android, including moving the core upload pipeline from React Native to native.
  • Improve CI/CD, release cadence, on-call practices, and old-version sunsetting to help mobile teams ship faster.
  • Partner with mobile QA on testability, including developer tooling, debug menus, and hooks for AI-assisted end-to-end testing.
  • Steward shared mobile foundations, including the mobile design system, offline data layer, push notifications, yearly iOS and Android readiness, and enterprise needs such as Intune and accessibility.
  • Partner with the Capture SDK team on native SDK adoption and with backend teams on upload reliability over weak networks.
  • Coach and grow a senior, distributed team.
  • Work with feature teams to determine what the platform provides and what individual teams build.
  • Partner closely with the mobile QA lead on test strategy and release quality.
  • Contribute to design and code reviews, debugging, and some coding, alongside people leadership and cross-team planning.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity in a fast-growing company.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents.
  • Unlimited and flexible vacation policy.
  • Generous paid parental and new child bonding leave.
  • A mandatory self-care day each month.
  • Remote wellbeing resources, including recurring fitness classes, meditation and mindfulness tools, virtual therapy, and family planning assistance.
  • Continued education support for management training, conferences, workshops, or certifications.
