About The Position

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, including data centers, servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment. The team focuses on solving challenging problems with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain, ensuring continual access to innovation for customers. The role involves joining a diverse team of engineers, specialists, and managers, collaborating across AWS to maintain high standards for safety and security, provide infinite capacity, and minimize costs. As a Systems Engineering Manager, you will lead the newly established System Modeling and Simulations (SMS) team within the Fleet Remediation Engineering (FRE) organization. This role involves establishing, building, and operating a state-of-the-art simulation and testing lab in Seattle, WA, to create the technical infrastructure and organizational capabilities for validating new electrical and mechanical data center products before deployment. You will directly manage a team of up to 10 specialized engineers, guiding them in delivering world-class simulation and hardware-in-the-loop validation work for AWS’s global data center fleet.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or an equivalent engineering science
  • 3+ cumulative years of experience managing an engineering team
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in either power systems engineering (generators, UPS, switchgear, protection relays, transformers) or mechanical/thermal systems engineering (cooling infrastructure, airflow, thermal modeling)
  • Hands-on experience with simulation or modeling tools applicable to electrical power systems or mechanical/thermal systems (e.g., PSCAD, ETAP, Ansys Fluent, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing concepts and principles, or hands-on experience with hardware validation methodologies in electrical or mechanical systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to present complex technical findings to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced coursework or research focus in power system dynamics, transient stability, thermal-fluid simulation, or real-time simulation platforms
  • Hands-on experience with FOAK product deployment programs in hyperscale or large-scale data center environments

Responsibilities

  • Hire and develop world-class engineering talent across mechanical, electrical, simulation, and systems integration/HIL domains
  • Manage team and individual performance, including promotions
  • Build a high-performing, inclusive team culture grounded in Amazon's Leadership Principles, with a bias for technical rigor and operational excellence
  • Manage team roadmap prioritization, workload balancing, and resource allocation across multiple concurrent product validation workstreams
  • Represent the SMS team in FRE leadership forums, program reviews, and cross-organizational planning sessions
  • Partner with the FRE Technical Program Manager to manage project timelines, dependencies, and deliverable commitments for internal customers
  • Develop and manage the SMS team's operating budget, including lab infrastructure, tooling, and headcount planning
  • Drive continuous improvement of team processes, validation methodologies, and engineering standards

Benefits

  • health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D insurance and option for Supplemental life plans, EAP, Mental Health Support, Medical Advice Line, Flexible Spending Accounts, Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement coverage)
  • 401(k) matching
