Engineering Intern - Forge Automated Code Assessment (Summer 2027)

Millennial Software Solutions•Chantilly, VA
•Onsite

About The Position

Millennial Software, part of Expedition Technology, is seeking two Engineering Interns for its Summer 2027 program at its Chantilly, Virginia headquarters. Interns will work on Forge, the company’s DevSecOps and capability platform, to develop an automated codebase assessment stage. The stage will assess repositories, report their components and structure, evaluate deployment readiness, and produce a readable narrative for program managers. The initial run will assess all Millennial Software repositories and provide leadership with a consolidated portfolio view during Expedition integration. The assessment will use inventory, structure, and deployment analyzers feeding a weighted score. An LLM layer will turn findings into a narrative and ranked remediation list, with narrative quality evaluated against a mentor-authored rubric in Keystone. Findings must trace to a specific file or dependency. Interns will work with assigned mentors, participate in daily standups, and present the full portfolio report at a leadership readout. The program runs May 17 through August 6, 2027, for 12 weeks. It is full-time and on site in Chantilly, Virginia, with remote flexibility. The final deliverable is a recorded pipeline run and leadership readout; targets are set by the mentor team.

  • Be a rising senior, or exceptional rising junior, pursuing a BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, and meet the GPA requirement.
  • Have strong Python, or Go/Rust, skills and be comfortable with Git, Linux, and reading unfamiliar codebases.
  • Have coursework or project experience in software engineering practices such as testing, CI/CD, containers, or static analysis.
  • Be available full time on site in Chantilly, Virginia, for the 12-week program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with static analysis or code-quality tools such as SonarQube, Semgrep, CodeQL, or linters, or with dependency/license scanners.
  • Experience building with LLM APIs, prompt design, or output evaluation.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab CI, or similar DevSecOps tooling.
  • Interest in software modernization and defense software delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Build an inventory analyzer covering languages, frameworks, dependency age, and license posture across Millennial Software repositories.
  • Build a structure analyzer covering complexity, coupling, test coverage, and dead code.
  • Build a deployment analyzer covering container readiness, configuration externalization, secrets hygiene, and CI presence.
  • Implement the weighted scoring model and portfolio roll-up, and emit a JSON record per run so scores can be tracked over time.
  • Build an LLM narrative layer that produces a readable report and ranked remediation list.
  • Evaluate narrative quality against the rubric in Keystone.
  • Run one external open-source repository end to end to demonstrate that the assessment stage generalizes.
  • Deliver the full portfolio report and present it at the leadership readout.
  • Participate in daily standups, bi-weekly sprint planning and demos, and program reviews.
