About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Region is seeking an Engineering Geologist 1/2/3 to join the Central Region Materials Section. This role involves developing geotechnical recommendations for Highway and Aviation related transportation projects. Responsibilities include preparing field exploration plans, leading drilling crews for geotechnical investigations, and writing geotechnical reports. The position requires working in both office and field environments, with periodic travel to rural communities via small aircraft. The department's mission is to 'Keep Alaska Moving,' and the division focuses on preserving and improving Alaska's transportation and public facilities infrastructure. The Central Regional Materials Section is a team of Geotechnical Engineers, Engineering Assistants, Engineering Geologists, and Lab staff who provide site-specific geotechnical data and communicate observations to engineers.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of the origins and structure of the earth, including the physical forces that have shaped it and its physical and organic history (Geology).
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, or theories of soil composition, formation, classification, mapping, testing, and management, including erosion, pollution, conservation, and watershed management (Soil Science).
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods for describing the location and distribution of land, sea, and air masses, including their physical locations, relationships, characteristics, and what the land supports (Geographical Sciences).
  • Holds self and others accountable for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results. Determines objectives, sets priorities, and delegates work. Accepts responsibility for own actions and decisions. Complies with established control systems and rules (Accountability).
  • Recognizes or uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicates information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a succinct and organized manner; produces written information, which may include technical material that is appropriate for the intended audience (Writing).
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geological engineering, or a closely related subdiscipline.
  • Engineering Geologist 2 requires: Bachelor's degree AND One year of professional engineering geology experience OR Master's degree.
  • Engineering Geologist 3 requires: Bachelor's degree AND Two years of professional engineering geology experience OR Master's degree AND One year of professional engineering geology experience.

Responsibilities
