About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Design & Engineering Services, is looking to fill an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex position located in Juneau. This role is designed for training and development towards becoming a Project Engineer, responsible for the onsite administration of construction projects. The position involves performing a variety of entry/trainee level professional engineering duties, basic engineering duties, and functioning as a Project Engineer for construction contract administration. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
  • One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to solve practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical and statistical techniques.
  • Ability to be thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Ability to use knowledge acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform job duties; work with, understand, and evaluate technical information related to the job; and advise others on technical issues.
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems; weigh relevance and accuracy of information; generate and evaluate alternative solutions, and make recommendations.
  • Ability to hold self and others accountable for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results; determine objectives, set priorities, and delegate work; accept responsibility for mistakes; and comply with established control systems and rules.
  • Occasional travel to project sites within the coastal region of Alaska (several trips during Spring/Summer/Fall).
  • Ability to fly to remote communities in small aircraft with infrequent need for overnight stays with minimal accommodations.
  • Ability to perform site inspections which can occur in adverse weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply.
  • Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1.
  • Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of entry/trainee level professional engineering duties.
  • Serve as Project Engineer for low or medium-level complexity construction projects and Assistant Project Engineer on more complex construction projects.
  • Function as a Project Engineer, the Department's designated representative for construction contract administration, responsible for the inspection, acceptance and payment of work performed on one or more ongoing construction projects of average to above average complexity.
  • Act in a Lead capacity to subordinate Engineering Assistants and Engineering Technicians.
