About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Northern Region Design and Engineering Services, is looking to fill an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex position to help them Keep Alaska Moving. In this position, you will develop and deliver highway and airport design projects from initial planning through final design and construction support. Responsibilities include preparing preliminary and detailed engineering designs, coordinating with utility companies and right-of-way staff, conducting field investigations, developing technical specifications, and preparing construction cost estimates. You will work closely with environmental, design, and technical specialists to evaluate project impacts and develop practical solutions. The role also includes supporting public involvement efforts by assisting with stakeholder meetings, presentations, and responses to public comments throughout the project development process.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET (for EA1)
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET (for EA1)
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination (for EA1)
  • Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET (for EA2)
  • One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere (for EA2)
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET (for EA2)
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination (for EA2)
  • One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere (for EA2)
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere (for EA2)
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET (for EA3)
  • Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level (for EA3)
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET (for EA3)
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination (for EA3)
  • Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level (for EA3)

Nice To Haves

  • An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply.
  • Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1.
  • The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.
  • Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.
  • Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree (for EA3).
  • Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month) (for EA3).
