About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design and Engineering Services is seeking an Engineering Geologist 1/2 to assist in keeping Alaska moving. This role involves geotechnical investigations, including field assessments, soil sampling, and subsurface condition evaluation for highways and airports. The position will also assist in preparing exploration plans, acquiring permits, coordinating with drilling teams, collecting and reporting field data, generating test hole logs, analyzing soil and surface mapping data, conducting basic geophysical surveys (CCR and GPR), and assisting in writing geologic reports. The selected applicant will also attend training, assist with public inquiries, and perform various tasks to support fieldwork.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geological engineering, or a closely related subdiscipline (e.g., environmental science, geophysics).
  • For Engineering Geologist 2: One year of professional engineering geology experience OR a Master's degree from an accredited college in geology, engineering geology, or geological engineering.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the investigation and evaluation of subsurface soil or geologic conditions and properties.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of the origins and structure of the earth.
  • Ability to recognize or use correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicate information briefly, clearly, and organized; produce appropriate written technical material.
  • Ability to set well-defined and realistic personal goals; display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment; work with minimal supervision; be motivated to achieve; demonstrate responsible behavior.
  • Ability to express information to individuals or groups effectively, considering the audience and nature of the information; make clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listen to others and respond appropriately.
  • Must provide a copy of academic transcripts at time of application.
  • Must provide a current copy of driver's license at time of interview.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct geotechnical investigations, including field assessments, soil sampling, and subsurface condition evaluation for highways and airports.
  • Assist in preparing exploration plans, acquiring permits, and coordinating with drilling teams and suppliers.
  • Record field data, generate test hole logs, and assist in analyzing soil and surface mapping data using software tools.
  • Conduct basic geophysical surveys (CCR and GPR) and assist in writing geologic reports.
  • Provide data for senior geologists.
  • Attend training, assist with public inquiries, and perform various tasks as needed to support fieldwork.
