$140,000 - $190,000Remote

About The Position

Bonterra is seeking a strategic Engineering Director to lead its Corporate Giving domain. This role involves building and shaping the engineering organization for corporate and workplace giving at an enterprise scale. The Director will own the product roadmap for Deed (employee and workplace giving), lead the migration from a legacy disbursement platform to a modern service, and ensure SOC 2 compliance. This is a foundational role focused on building an organization, making architectural decisions, and partnering with product and clients on a roadmap supporting over $500M in annual disbursements.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership, with demonstrated experience at Director level or equivalent.
  • Track record of building and scaling multi-team engineering organizations—not just managing a team, but growing one from early-stage.
  • Experience owning or co-owning a product roadmap alongside product leadership.
  • Deep technical credibility: able to evaluate architectural decisions, set credible non-functional requirements, and challenge technical proposals meaningfully.
  • Familiarity with TypeScript/Node.js and AWS serverless infrastructure; comfortable evaluating modern cloud-native architectures.
  • Experience with compliance programs at scale (SOC 2, PCI-DSS, or equivalent).
  • AI-first mindset: actively uses AI coding tools, champions spec-driven development, and coaches engineers to work effectively with AI-generated output.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with enterprise clients, senior leadership, and ICs.
  • Passion for empowering the social good sector through technology.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with employee giving, workplace giving, grant management, or disbursement processing.
  • Experience leading platform modernization — moving a production system forward while keeping it stable and compliant.
  • Background in mission-driven, nonprofit, or social impact technology.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead the Corporate Giving engineering organization, scaling it from an early-stage team to a fully staffed, high-performing domain.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent across IC levels, building management depth as the domain grows.
  • Coach engineers and leads on spec-driven development and AI-assisted delivery practices, holding the organization accountable for their consistent application.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute directly to technical work, including architecture reviews, design decisions, and hands-on engagement with the codebase (minimum 25% of time).
  • Own the technical direction for Corporate Giving, including Deed, Bonterra Grants, the legacy disbursement platform, and the new standalone disbursement service.
  • Own Deed's product roadmap in partnership with Product leadership, focusing on product vision and prioritization for employee and workplace giving.
  • Lead the migration from the legacy disbursement platform to the new standalone disbursement service, ensuring continuity for enterprise clients.
  • Ensure systems meet SOC 2 compliance requirements, working with InfoSec and GRC on ongoing compliance posture and audit readiness.
  • Maintain the technical depth needed to evaluate architectural decisions, set credible non-functional requirements, and earn the confidence of senior engineers.
  • Own delivery outcomes across the domain: set clear goals, establish metrics, and ensure commitments are met.
  • Coordinate inter-team dependencies with Online Contribution & Forms and Payments Platform.
  • Anticipate and remove process friction at organizational scale, addressing structural bottlenecks, dependency issues, and workflow inefficiencies that constrain delivery.
  • Partner with Product, Customer Success, and enterprise clients on Corporate Giving roadmap direction and prioritization.
  • Work with InfoSec on access controls, SOC 2 requirements, and audit preparation.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Engineering and peer Directors on org-wide engineering standards and delivery model evolution.
