About The Position

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems. In our GSE Production Mechanical Engineering Department, we have an exciting opportunity located in Poway, CA for a Ground Support Equipment Engineering Designer that wants to be part of making history by participating in the development of some of the most novel remotely piloted aircraft of our time. Under general supervision with limited review, this position is responsible for providing technical design solutions for a range of difficult design problems for structural products and components of products using computer-aided design (CAD) equipment and technical engineering software such as NX or Creo Parametric (ProEngineer). Assignments are normally outlined in terms of objectives and anticipated results. Work is reviewed at milestones for adequacy in meeting objectives. Responsible for documenting findings, communicating results to engineering staff and may make technical design presentations as required. Typically has frequent intra-organizational contact and may have some customer contact.

Requirements

  • Associates degree or a certificate from a recognized organization indicating completion of training in NX, Creo Parametric (ProEngineer) or CATIA design software plus ten or more years of progressive experience utilizing CAD software with at least two of those years spent utilizing NX or Creo Parametric (ProEngineer) engineering design software.
  • Additional education may be substituted in lieu of work experience.
  • Complete understanding of engineering design concepts and principles.
  • Ability to understand new concepts quickly, applying them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Able to organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases.
  • Able to determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Good communication, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops design solutions for assigned structural products and components.
  • Interacts with engineering staff on design concepts and progress.
  • May be assigned design responsibility for a major portion of a project or program.
  • Develop layouts, sketches, and blueprints and may investigate design factors such as damage tolerance, durability, and structural modeling.
  • Details related to structural assemblies, mechanisms, and devices.
  • Validates conformity to design standards and specifications and identifies design errors and other deficiencies and recommends changes.
  • Provides documentation, identifies design issues, and makes technical design presentations to engineering staff and customers as required.
  • Remains current in CAD techniques and any applicable state-of-the-art engineering design software applications.
  • May direct the activities of less experienced designers and support staff.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
