Civil Engineering Designer II

Progressive CompaniesGrand Rapids, MI

About The Position

As a Civil Engineering Designer II, you will design and produce construction documents for a range of public and private civil projects — site plans, utility plans and profiles, road design, traffic signal plans, grading plans, and right-of-way plans — using your competency in AutoCAD Civil 3D. You’ll collaborate daily with project managers and engineers across multiple concurrent project assignments, building the technical judgment and design instincts senior designers rely on. This role offers the chance to sharpen your CAD production and design skills across a variety of project types and grow toward a licensed Civil Engineer path — with the mentorship, quality-control coaching, and multidisciplinary exposure of a firm that invests in developing its designers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program or equivalent in education and experience required for professional licensure.
  • 5+ years of post-graduation professional Civil Engineering experience.
  • Comfortable working in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer In Training (passed Fundamentals of Engineering Exam).
  • CSI-CDT certification.
  • Experience in HEC RAS or EPANET (water distribution).

Responsibilities

  • Produce accurate design deliverables across multiple project types.
  • Contribute to preliminary concepts and full design-phase deliverables — drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and supporting materials — for site plans, utility plans and profiles, road design, traffic signal plans, grading plans, and right-of-way plans, using AutoCAD Civil 3D and complementary software (Revit, HEC-RAS, EPANET, MicroStation) to meet deadlines with oversight from senior engineers.
  • Manage multiple concurrent project assignments.
  • Maintain assignments across several small projects at once, coordinating with multiple project engineers to deliver contract documents that stay consistent with each project’s scope, schedule, and fee allotment.
  • Deliver work that holds up under review.
  • Review your own work for accuracy before submission, flag design and documentation inconsistencies to senior team members, and build toward proactively resolving them yourself — reducing the rework senior staff need to catch downstream.
  • Ramp into full design responsibility.
  • Within the first 90 days, learn the firm’s CAD and quality-control standards, take ownership of deliverable production on at least one active project, and begin attending off-site meetings and field inspections alongside senior staff.
  • Strengthen designs through applied engineering knowledge.
  • Perform calculations for drainage, grading, and foundation design, and develop CAD/BIM models for roads, utilities, and site plans that align with applicable codes, zoning, and environmental regulations, coordinating with the broader project team.
  • Contribute to a learning team.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and “Lessons Learned” sessions, and proactively seek out more complex project tasks from senior staff to accelerate your growth toward the next level.
