About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Design & Engineering Services, is seeking an Engineering Assistant 1/2 Flex to support efforts to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on public roads throughout the Central Region. This role involves applying engineering principles and established standards to conduct traffic and safety studies, analyze data, and develop recommendations for highway safety improvements. Responsibilities include assisting with traffic control, speed studies, intersection operations, safety projects, and monitoring traffic safety devices. The position also entails reviewing traffic and highway plans, permits, reports, and safety mitigation measures, providing technical comments, and assisting with traffic safety reporting, crash data mapping, program performance monitoring, and the development of engineering standards. Additionally, the role involves responding to public and agency requests, attending meetings and training, and providing general engineering support to enhance transportation safety and efficiency.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and method applicable to planning, designing, and constructing of transportation systems including traffic analysis, signal analysis, highway capacity, pavement design, bridge construction, planning of transportation projects, environmental analysis of transportation facilities, and transportation network analysis.
Ability to identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
Ability to express information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information.
Ability to make clear and convincing oral and written presentations.
Ability to listen to others, attend to nonverbal cues, and respond appropriately.
Knowledge of the organization's mission and functions, and how its social, political, and technological systems work and operates effectively within them; this includes the programs, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of the organization.
A valid Driver's License is essential.

Engineer-in-training certification is preferred.
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1.
