About The Position

The Engineer Design position for Southern Company Gas assists in the planning, design, and development of technical standards for gas distribution infrastructure projects. The right candidate must be a self-starter, excellent communicator, critical thinker and able to make sound decisions. Natural Gas is an essential part of America’s Energy mix and a trusted energy source for more than 70 million homes and businesses. This position is an exciting opportunity for persons who enjoy the challenges of supporting the construction of natural gas facilities. Please note, this position is posted as a job family and may be filled at either the Engineer, I (Level 3), Engineer, II (Level 4) or Engineer, III (Level 5). People who demonstrate advanced skills in terms of work experience, education and certifications may be eligible for the advanced grade.

Requirements

• Ability to work across a matrix organization structure with horizontal and vertical teams
• BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil or General)
• 1-2 years of progressive Engineering experience (for Level 3)
• 2 -3 years of progressive Engineering experience (for Level 4)
• 5 years of progressive engineering experience in gas standards and materials, project engineering or construction management of natural gas, pipeline facilities or other applicable industries. (for Level 5)
• 2 + years familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices (for Level 5)
• Project Management
• Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
• Computer Assisted Design/Geographic Information System - basic proficiency (for Level 3)
• CAD/GIS - intermediate proficiency (for Level 4)
• MS Office - advanced proficiency

Nice To Haves

• Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) (Preferred for Level 5)

Responsibilities

• Working on gas storage or gas fueling station assignments
• Performing assignments involving the design of components or functionality of pipeline products
• Involved in the planning and design of mechanical equipment and components involving maintenance of mechanical equipment.
• Performing system balances to determine the best overall solution to solve system issues or identify system low points and methods to best solve them.
• Provide oversight and support for construction activities
