About The Position

LG Energy Solution Michigan Inc. develops and manufactures large lithium-ion polymer batteries and modules for electric vehicle and energy storage applications. The Defect Engineer I identifies battery cell defects caused by contamination and reduces them through equipment and procedural improvements. The role focuses on quality and continuous improvement in a lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing clean room.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
• Lean Six Sigma (LSS) certification.
• 0–3 years of experience in engineering problem solving, with an emphasis on hands-on continuous improvement implementation.
• Experience or knowledge in materials and mechanical engineering.
• Manufacturing experience.
• Microsoft Office proficiency, especially Excel.
• CAD design skills.
• Comfort working independently and with others.
• Results-oriented and perseverant.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Project and process management skills.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Technical proficiency and motivation to continuously improve.

Nice To Haves

• MBA or MS degree.

Responsibilities

• Implement improvements to reduce foreign particles using a structured problem-solving approach such as Lean Six Sigma.
• Use complex equipment such as scanning electron microscopes (SEM).
• Identify the root cause and source of contamination in the production process.
• Design, prototype—including through 3D printing—and pilot improvements.
• Verify that improvements are effective.
• Standardize improvements and communicate them in writing and verbally.
• Train production team members on best practices and process changes.
• Collaborate with teams such as Production and Quality to resolve internal and external quality issues.
• Attend weekly meetings with the production team to review and plan.
• Participate in large-scale planning or installation projects as needed.
• Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.
• Aid in designing the testing or control of processing procedures.
• Monitor material performance and evaluate quality issues.
• Conduct or oversee tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure quality.
• Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives.
• Maintain work-site cleanliness in accordance with 5S3R standards: Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain; Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
