About The Position

In this position you will perform structural engineering analysis and calculations for the development of bridge load ratings, bridge management tasks, and overload permit assessment. You will also complete bridge safety inspections, including routine, non-redundant steel tension member (NSTM), low water, and in-depth inspections. Some design and preparation of bridge construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and report tasks may be involved as well. The DOT&PF Bridge Section provides design services for new bridge and bridge rehabilitation construction projects, as well as a broad range of services associated with the existing inventory of the State's 1,000 public highway bridges. We work hard to support our Department’s mission to Keep Alaska Moving. The Bridge Section is a production-oriented office comprised of hands-on engineers who put safety first and are recognized nationally as experts in our field. The office culture is supportive and encouraging, with opportunities for growth. The office has 25 staff members – small enough to be personal, but large enough to have a broad knowledge base in all subdisciplines of bridge engineering. Requirements

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.
  • Must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b) if not registered in Alaska.
  • Must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License.
  • Physically able to descend / ascend bridge embankments and riverbanks.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the design and analysis of complex structures using a variety of materials.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

Nice To Haves

  • Documentation of National Bridge Safety Inspection Standards or equivalent certification for Bridge Safety Inspection, if applicable.
  • A sample bridge load rating or set of design calculations.
  • Technical writing sample (e.g., bridge type selection or routine inspection report preferred but not required)
