About The Position

Trellis works with young people, adults, families, and communities to unlock their potential and support their growth, focusing on generational change through a spectrum of services for people of all backgrounds, including those with complex needs. Their programs aim to improve access to resources, develop family and community supports, and build people’s capacity to deal with life’s challenges, empowering individuals to overcome systemic barriers and reach their full potential. The Employment Facilitator is responsible for planning and implementing employment-focused opportunities and activities to promote self-sufficiency, independence, and the successful integration of immigrants into Calgary. These activities include employment skills workshops, resume and cover letter building support, interview preparation, employment searching, education on Canadian and Alberta labor laws, guidance on appropriate workplace dress, work experience programs, and language and social norms. The Employment Facilitator will provide support to youth and adults both individually and in group settings. This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program, part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, designed to help young people, especially those facing employment barriers, gain necessary skills, experience, and support for a successful transition into the workforce.

Requirements

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person who has been granted refugee protection under Canadian law
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (international students are not eligible)
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Social Work, Education, Child and Youth Care, Behavioral Science, Psychology, Intercultural Studies, or a related discipline.
  • 1-3 years experience in working with immigrant youth and/or populations in a community setting.
  • Culturally competent with an understanding of the immigration process and issues affecting immigrants and refugees including the impact of racism and discrimination of young newcomers.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a variety of situations, develop and maintain relationships with other professionals within the community.
  • Ability to work independently, meet reporting deadlines, and willingness to accept personal responsibility for program outcomes.
  • Good understanding and able to appropriately apply behavior management skills with individuals and in group settings.
  • Current Standard First Aid.
  • Able to work flexible hours according to the needs of the youth, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Criminal Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Welfare Intervention Check.

Responsibilities

  • Create and conduct outreach and awareness raising presentations for schools, external committee meetings, companies, and other community partners.
  • Assist in the design of innovative, engaging, low barrier employment programs that encourage and support successful integration and meet the needs of immigrant youth in Calgary.
  • Deliver ongoing skill development and employment training sessions.
  • Using community partnerships, establish multiple sites where programs can be delivered that are accessible to immigrant youth.
  • Bring in guest employment related facilitators to run specific employment programs periodically.
  • Deliver programs with a culturally aware and strength-based lens to facilitate self-sufficiency.
  • Be a liaison with families and provide translation when necessary.
  • Support and encourage the individual’s natural support network.
  • Provide referrals to other Trellis supports and external services when appropriate.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Responsible for collecting necessary documents for service provision including immigration information and all intake information as required by Trellis.
  • Responsible for monthly reporting including i-care data entry, success stories, activity summaries, and all reporting required by the manager.
  • Collection of surveys and feedback from participants.
