The Emergency Department Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing the functions and activities of the emergency department and ambulance department to achieve ongoing objectives. This role is accountable for the analysis, evaluation, and strategic planning for emergency and ambulance services, customer service, and staff clinical competencies. The manager establishes and maintains updated policies and procedures, sets departmental goals aligned with hospital objectives, and manages the annual operating budget to ensure cost-effective utilization of resources while maintaining quality patient care. Key responsibilities include reviewing department performance, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, interpreting policies, demonstrating clinical competency programs, and fostering a commitment to continuous improvement in care, processes, and services. The role requires creative thinking, teamwork, flexibility, and a focus on improving patient experience. The manager also maintains resources, resolves issues collaboratively, participates in educational programs and committee meetings, manages records and budgetary information, and works with related agencies and network hospitals. A working knowledge of safety, legal, and liability issues in emergency services is essential. The manager also coordinates house-wide continuing education programs and functions clinically when necessary.
