Together, we will help Alaskan families, elders, and those in need reach higher levels of independence and self-sufficiency. Eligibility Technicians assist the public by connecting them to a variety of public assistance programs and services our agency provides. Requirements

  • One year of entry level experience as an Eligibility Technician 1 with the State of Alaska; OR One year performing similar work that developed knowledge and skills in applying program requirements and working with client customers in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of federal and/or state government or public assistance benefit regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division correctly.
  • Ability to solve practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques such as formulas and percentages.
  • Ability to show understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with others.
  • Ability to deal effectively with individuals who are possibly difficult, hostile, or distressed.
  • Ability to relate well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations.
  • Ability to be sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.
  • Ability to use computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
  • Ability to be thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Post-secondary education in such fields as sociology, social work, psychology, counseling, human services, vocational rehabilitation, developmental disabilities, behavioral sciences, business, public administration, or accounting may substitute for the required experience (undergraduate credits: 2.67 semester/4 quarter hours = 1 month).

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate financial, personal, medical, and household information to determine program eligibility, authorize benefits, and maintain case records within mandatory timeframes.
