About The Position

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) is responsible for making city government work for all New Yorkers. DCAS manages iconic courthouses and municipal buildings, purchases goods and services for over 80 City agencies, recruits and trains City employees, manages 56 public buildings, and oversees the greenest municipal vehicle fleet in the country. The elevator operations team, within Facilities Management and Construction, maintains and repairs all elevators, escalators, and ADA lifts in DCAS-owned and managed buildings. This team ensures equipment safety, conducts regular inspections, and addresses violations from the NYC Department of Buildings. They also prepare job specifications for elevators and escalators and assist project managers with modernization projects.

Requirements

  • Only confirmed passers of the Elevator Mechanic Exam 6051 and those who are serving permanently in the title are eligible to apply.
  • Five years of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last ten years as an elevator mechanic.
  • Not less than four and one-half years of the experience described above plus at least 6 months of closely related experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical or electromechanical control systems, or electrical, hydraulic or mechanical components of escalators, drawbridges, aircraft, rail cars, or mechanical doors.
  • Not less than four and one-half years of the experience described above plus at least 600 hours of training acquired at a trade or technical school or vocational high school or completed post-secondary education, approved by a state's Department of Education or comparable governmental agency, with a major course of study in mechanical, electromechanical, electrical or electronic technology or closely related field.
  • Possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment and maintain it for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform repairs to elevators, escalators, platform lifts, conveyors, and dumbwaiters.
  • Respond to emergencies such as passenger entrapments, elevator service problems, and elevator power failures, providing rescue measures.
  • Inspect, maintain, adjust, and repair elevators and escalators, including lubricating components, inspecting and repairing doors, rails, cables, SCR drives, micro controls, and rewiring systems.
  • Conduct yearly tests of all elevators and escalators.
  • Oversee elevator inspections for Cat 1 and Cat 5.
  • Clear all ECB and PVT violations (work performed in house).
  • Maintain logs on performed repairs and maintenance of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and handicap lifts per Department of Buildings Codes.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance for all elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and handicap lifts.
  • Maintain and repair electrical/hydraulic systems for elevators and escalators.
  • Oil, grease, and lubricate equipment.
  • Change lights, repair and adjust cables, generators, SCR drives, microprocessor controls, and doors.
  • Conduct daily visual inspections of all equipment and related controls.
