About The Position

This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Development Center Division of the Development Services Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is under the direction of the Chief Electrical Inspector. Employees of this classification utilize skills, knowledge and abilities which may have been acquired prior to assuming the responsibilities of the position. Essential job functions include: conducting inspections to ensure the proper installation and safe operation of elevators, escalators, people lifts, and freight elevators. The Elevator Inspector I is responsible for witnessing tests which may involve a degree of personal risk. The employee works independently in enforcing codes and specifications outlined in International Building Code, National Electrical Code, and national elevator code books. Work products are periodically reviewed at the discretion of the Elevator Inspector II and/or Chief Electrical Inspector.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of proper materials and devices used in elevator construction.
  • Knowledge of properly operating elevator systems.
  • Knowledge of procedures for testing elevator systems.
  • Knowledge of and skill in following safety procedures.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, and drawings.
  • Skill in assessing the overall condition of different elevators, escalators and people lift systems.
  • Skill in using standard office equipment.
  • Skill in recording information accurately.
  • Skill in communicating verbally and in writing using tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and apply knowledge of elevator, electrical, and building codes to work performed.
  • Ability to work independently in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to make objective decisions.
  • Ability and willingness to work in enclosed or high areas.
  • Possession of a current State of Oklahoma Elevator Inspector License.
  • Possession of a current State of Oklahoma Qualified Elevator Inspector Certification.
  • Possession of valid driver license (Operator).
  • Licenses must be issued by the State of Oklahoma or a state having reciprocity with the State of Oklahoma.
  • Must obtain a permanent State Elevator Inspector License and Qualified Elevator Inspector Certification within one (1) year from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion.
  • Shall not be interested directly or indirectly in any elevator business within the City.
  • Shall not perform any elevator work within the City.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting inspections to ensure the proper installation and safe operation of elevators, escalators, people lifts, and freight elevators.
  • Witnessing tests which may involve a degree of personal risk.
  • Working independently in enforcing codes and specifications outlined in International Building Code, National Electrical Code, and national elevator code books.
  • Performing acceptance, annual, five year and remodel inspection tests.
