About The Position

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for the inspection and investigation of elevators to determine compliance with applicable national, state and local regulations, codes and/or manufacturer’s specifications. This includes the investigation of complaints, accidents or reported incidents for cause and determination of safe operating practices, equipment failures or violations. This is the specialist level of the job family where employees are assigned responsibility involving advanced level professional work related to conducting elevator inspections and investigations. Responsibilities may include directing or coordinating inspections or investigations of elevators by applying applicable national, state and local codes and/or manufacturer’s specifications. Tasks are performed independently with minimal supervision; the employee is given latitude technically with freedom to develop and recommend new guidelines and policies as applicable.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience in one or more of the following trades: machine or electrical maintenance or monitoring, hydraulics, pneumatics, heat and air, machinist, steel fabrication, or small engine or large engine repair.
  • Knowledge of laws, codes, rules and regulations for the inspection of elevators.
  • Knowledge of inspection and investigative methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety concepts, rules and codes.
  • Knowledge of computer usage and office automation software.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping and report writing methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of mechanical apparatus design and operation.
  • Knowledge of the principles of mechanical apparatus.
  • Ability to conduct inspections and investigations.
  • Ability to apply safety codes and standards.
  • Ability to provide consultation and advisory service.
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply laws, codes, rules and regulations to inspection duties and determine compliance or noncompliance.
  • Ability to train others.

  • Some positions with the Department of Labor may require applicants to have information technology experience.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects elevators for proper set-up, electrical and mechanical safety and operation using a check list in the ride and/or manufacturer’s manual; observes elevators during operation for compliance with safety guidelines; elevator wiring for compliance with the requirements of the National Electric Code, NFPA 70.
  • Issues certificates of operation for elevators that meet all requirements; re-inspects elevators that do not pass inspection after being repaired.
  • Completes inspection reports listing all violations, necessary steps to correct them and a time frame to bring violations into compliance; consults with owners or operators to explain violations and what is required to bring the unit back into compliance.
