About The Position

Caterpillar’s Intelligent Machine Systems – CAT Technology Division is seeking an Electronic Systems Verification and Validation Engineer to support lab-based testing for Caterpillar machines. The role works with an engineering team to verify and validate embedded software and develop expertise in the electrical and electronic systems used in Caterpillar products and technologies. The team performs system integration testing using Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) methodologies to deliver reliable, high-quality software for internal and external customers. The position is based onsite in Mossville, Illinois, Monday through Friday. Required travel is less than 10% domestically and internationally. Domestic relocation assistance is available; US work sponsorship is not offered.

Requirements

Degree or advanced degree in an accredited engineering program in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
Excellent working knowledge of dSPACE hardware and software, such as VEOS, ControlDesk, and Automation Desk, to operate the dSPACE XiL environment independently.
Working knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques, and tools, with the ability to design, plan, and execute testing for L6 machine-level software integration.
Ability to perform software regression and delta content testing and document results to meet functional safety and ISO 9001 requirements.
Ability to document test processes and results and prepare and analyze software defect-tracking reports.
Working knowledge of data analysis techniques and tools to review test data and explain discrepancies and inconsistencies.
Ability to identify possible causes of bench issues or software defects using sound technical techniques.
Ability to break complex problems into smaller components and use checklists to ensure test scripts and results are error-free.
Collaborative team player with strong verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate requirements and ideas across diverse teams and present and review test results effectively.

Nice To Haves

Experience assembling and modifying test benches, including wiring and harnessing.
Experience in the design, development, or testing of embedded systems.
Strong experience with dSPACE test equipment and Automation Desk.
Strong attention to detail throughout all phases of testing.
Software development experience using C, C++, or Simulink.
Strong experience with Python scripting.
Strong experience with Opal test equipment.
Strong experience with SIL and Googletest.
Regular use of GIT configuration management.
Systems or requirements experience in the automotive or heavy equipment industry.

Responsibilities

Work with the testing team lead, machine system coordinators, and electronic system design engineers to define testing priorities and determine test coverage.
Work with system engineers to understand machine feature requirements, develop and implement test plans, perform regression testing, document results, and troubleshoot new software features as needed.
Perform software regression and delta content testing, and document results to meet functional safety and ISO 9001 requirements.
Document test processes and results, and prepare and analyze software defect-tracking reports.
Develop product-testing procedures, including identifying and implementing new bench capabilities and participating in selecting future test environments and tools.
Develop automated test scripts to improve efficiency in HiL and SiL environments.
